From: Judy Weller To: Elaine Mattsen HB Herald, Mon. June 11, 1894 Some petty thieves have now taken to stealing the planks used by poor men for the purposes of quarrying. Last week Mr KING, who works in a quarry in the Milton-road, had two planks stolen. As we have on former occasions remarked, it is very evident that we have not sufficient police protection in Napier. The annual local examination in musical knowledge in connection with Trinity College, London, was held by the local secretary, Mr Hugh APLIN, in the old Provincial Chambers on Saturday. A large number of candidates presented themselves. The examination was under the supervision of Rev. D. SIDEY. At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday before Mr TURNBULL, S.M., an elderly man named Peter MILLAR was charged with giving tobacco to one of a gang of prisoners being marched from gaol to the Court-house. The offence was proved, and his Worship imposed a fine of £5 and costs. The alternative was one month's hard labor, and prisoner went to gaol.
