Hi list, for those of you with English ancestry the Yesterdays site (link below) has been updated with further records of folks who passed or had dealings with Derbyshire. Many were from other areas of the UK. The latest batch includes Melbourne Bastardy with folks from the neighbouring county of Leics mentioned. Church Broughton Bastardy with mention of Staffordshire people and one from Cheshire. There are of course many many other records which have been added over the last few weeks. mike -- http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm

HBH 1896 Feb 28 2 Constable LAW and HAMILTON The Poverty Bay Herald says: - A brutal assault was made on Constable LAW on Tuesday evening by a drunken fellow named Michael HAMILTON, whom the constable was arresting for being drunk whilst in charge of a horse. Constable LAW'S eye and the side of his face were blackened and a handful of his beard was pulled out, and the man, not content with thus battering the limb of the law, kicked and attempted to stamp on him. The man who was a sailor on the Ocean Rover, and was discharged from that vessel for misbehavior, was brought before Mr BOOTH S.M. The Magistrate characterised the assault as a most brutal and unwarranted attack, and said he would inflict the full penalty. Accused was fined £20 or three months imprisonment with hard labor in Napier gaol for assaulting the police, and for being drunk whilst in charge of a horse was fined ?5 or two months' imprisonment, the sentence to be cumulative.
HBH 1896 Feb 27 2 COURT At the S.M. Court yesterday morning before Messrs. LYNDON and BLYTHE J' P's. Annie PRESTON was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond. The police gave a bad account of the woman who had been convicted 14 times previously, and who had just served nine months on a similar charge to that brought against her. The Bench sentenced the accused to 12 months' imprisonment. Frank FRETER, a runaway sailor and companion of the woman, was charged with having no visible means of support and resisting the Police in execution of their duty. On the first charge he was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and on the second to two months, the sentences to be cumulative.
HBH 1896 Feb 27 2 Sutton A pathetic feature of the death of Miss Constance SUTTON is the fact that the unfortunate young lady was on her death-bed when she received the late Mr TIFFEN'S medal as dux of the High School, the donor having just died the day before. Two of three days previously the young lady who was a deserved favourite had entertained a number of friends partly to commemorate her success at school, and partly to celebrate her eighteenth birthday.
HBH 1896 Feb 28 2 BARTON The Pahiatua Herald says: - Mr BARTON, manager of the Bank of Australasia at FIELDING, with his wife, arrived in PAHIATUA on Monday evening on bicycles. They journeyed on their machines the whole distance with the exception of about seven miles of road which had been just newly installed. They both started for MASTERTON on their machines yesterday morning. Mrs BARTON wore an ordinary bloomer rig, and led off at a tip-top pace in the presence of an admiring crowd.
I am going to Napier not too far from the Cem one day in the coming week and I will take a look and see and take my camera in case Elaine Hi everyone I have been searching for years for the whereabouts of adolphus bisson.? I contacted births, deaths and marriages and after much searching they found him on their 1874 death register, (as adolph. bisson) having died in Napier aged 4.? I then asked Napier City Council if they had a burial record for that name,?which they did not.? Much more searching on the web?and I found him wrongly transcribed as adolphete bissan.? Another email to Napier City Council and they found him recorded as adolphete bisan and buried in the old Napier hill cemetery, in area 1859-1895, section one, plot/niche No 718.? Does anyone know how I would go about finding out where this would be in the cemetery?? Does somebody have a map of the cemetery? It just proves that 'never giving up' is the best policy.? > Lesley
