    3. Michael, I do not think that I replied to your e mail, & I apologise. We have sold our property to move back to Waipawa, & time & computer sort of slip by. The name Michael does not show in my family, however, I was researching for a man in the USA, who had family in NZ. In about 8 weeks time, we should have unpacked all my research stuff much of which is stored. But, the name Michael, does not ring a bell. PHAIR is such an unusual name in N.Z., however, there seem to be at least 4 different unrelated families, who arrived in the 1800's, from both England & Ireland. My lot from Nth Ireland, & before that probably Cork in Ireland South. Thankyou for your e mail. 3. HBH 1896 March 3 4 WHAKARARA Particulars have reached me this afternoon of a bush fire at WHAKARARA. A family named WOOTEN lived on the side of the Mangataraura creek on Mr BARLOW'S property. The fire came along so swiftly that Mrs WOOTEN got their goods out of the house they were, with the house, entirely consumed before they could remove them. Including a sewing machine, side saddle, bed and bedding, blankets etc. The husband was working 15 miles away at the time, and the wife and the children had to cross the river three times before they got into a place of safety. The consequence of these fires means absolute ruin to many people, who have no present resources.

On Saturday night the fire came through the big railway cutting near Mr LEACH'S and the bell of the Wesleyan chapel was rang as an alarm. Among those who homes have been burnt are: - Messrs WRIGHT of MAKOTUKU, and BECKET, JESSEP, P. GUNDERSON, and C.SMITH, of NORSEWOOD. This morning the bridge near HEIGH'S on the Danish line, was on fire, but the fire was put out before any great damage was done.

    3. HBH 1896 March 3 4 WAIPAWA FIRES Our Waipawa correspondnent writing yesterday says: - Yesterday morning Mr JULL, county chairman, accompanied by Mr GILMOUR, overseer visited ASHLEY-CLINTON, with the object of promoting the interrupted communications, due to the fires. It appears that the fire commenced in the black block (Nos. 1 & 2, and 3, MAKARETU survey district where Mr M'GIBBIN who leases Rees WATKINS' place was burnt out.. There is absolutely no salvage, and the insurances are few and in small amounts. Those who have not lost their homes have lost fencing, grass seed, and winter feed and stock. The fire travelled at hurricane speed. The bridges at IRELANDS and ANDERSON'S were burn away, and the chairman found it impossible to get to MAKARETU unless on horseback. He instructed the overseer to prepare plans for new bridges, and in the meantime to provide temporary provision for crossing the creeks, tenders to be called at once.

    3. HBH 1896 March 2 2 MOORE Our Waipawa correspondent writing on Saturday says: - An exciting scene was witnessed in Rose street this morning a little before 7 o'clock. Mr MOORE is having a brick wall built in front of his residence, and consequently the space is partly open, and access to his fruit trees reliably easy. Hearing a slight noise he went out and found some boys tearing down the unripe plums from one of the trees, who quickly retreated, followed by the owner for some distance, but years or the want of them gave the youngsters the advantage for the time being. It is to be hoped that they eat the stolen fruit, in which they may have something to impress the matter on their minds.
