    3. Judy Weller Mr ? SALEK, of WANGANUI, applied on Saturday morning to the Stipendiary Magistrate, NAPIER, for a license to open a pawnbroking establishment in this town. The applicant was highly spoken of by Sergeant CULLEN, of WANGANUI, and the application was granted. We may add that if it be advisable to establish a pawnshop in NAPIER, it could not be in better hands than those of Mr SALEK, whose reputation as an energetic, experienced, and honorable business man stands high in TIMARU and WANGANUI.

CATO, who has been transferred to the WOODVILLE branch of the Bank of New Zealand and leaves for there today, was last night the recipient of a very cordial "send-off" by his many friends of the NAPIER Rowing Club at the Clarendon Club Hotel. Mr CATO has been a very popular member of the local rowing, cricket, football, and other clubs in NAPIER for several years, and bears with him hearty good wishes for his future advancement from all with whom he has come in contact. He is one of the representative crew of the rowing club, and his loss will be greatly felt in aquatic circles.

    3. Have the following info for you. Rigby Brooks Died 4 Jan 1949, aged 56 Occupation Labourer Address: Te Awa Avenue Buried Park Island Cemetery Plot 28 Block 15 Public section. There is also an Ellen Elizabeth Bellerby died 1964 aged 74 in same cemetery. The NZSG microfiche also have his monumental inscription. If you do not have access to microfiche I can access this at our library and forward you the wording upon his tombstone. Have also found more info. He was born 25 Feb 1894 and his parent or guardian was AL Bellerby. He enrolled at Makauri School in Gisborne on 19 Sept 1905. His last day was 5 Dec 1905. More info re this is with the Gisborne NZSG branch. His next destination was listed as Home so maybe he was homeschooled after that. Address was given as Makaraka which is in Gisborne. I was born in Gisborne and went to the Te Karaka DHS. A Merrick Bellerby was in my Std 3 & 4 class in 1947. Any relation? I have a school photo with him in it. If he is a relative and you would like a copy can scan it for you or just scan his image from the photo. Hope this is of assistance. Where do I get information from the grave stone , who would have a record ?" If you are able to locate a set of the NZSG Cemetery fiche near you, you can check that for a transcription (it appears from their online catalogue that the SOG in London holds a set, if that's any help to you). If that's not possible, someone on this list may be able to do it for you. Alternatively, you could email the Napier City Council and ask if they can help. 3. Judy Weller Mr C. Tilleard NATUSCH, an architect who has gained considerable distinction in the WAIRARAPA and SEVENTY-MILE BUSH districts, has decided to establish a branch in NAPIER, particulars of the whereabouts of which will be published anon. The following will represent the STARS against the CLIVE Juniors at FARNDON on Saturday next:- Backs: STODDARD, PETERS, SYLVESTER, CULLEN, BEAR (captain), and GFILBERD Forwards: MUNRO, SELLAR, WILSON, LONERAGGAN, SWEENEY, FRANKLIN, COWAN, TIER, and G. TANKARD Emergencies: NIGHTINGALE and CUNNINGHAM. It has always been supposed that oysters will not grow in POVERTY BAY, and several attempts to acclimatise them on various portions of the coast were unsuccessful. However, Captain ANDERSON, of the s.s., Manapouri, informs us that on his last visit to the port an anchor, which had been lost overboard from one of the company's boats, and which the Manapouri picked up, was found to be covered with a large number of well-grown and delicikous bivalves, which were much relished by those on board.

    2. mattse165
    3. Judy Weller Fears are entertained at the Port as to the safety of a man named HUDSON and a youth named NEAL who hails from the MEANEE district. The two left the IRON POT about 9 o'clock on Wednesday morning in an open boat for a day's fishing in the bay. About half-past 2 in the afternoon they were seen about three and a half miles from the land, lying off from the breakwater in the direction of MAHIA peninsula by John ANDERSON and Dan M'ALLISTER, trying to make headway homewards, a course which was rendered very difficult, owing to the rising sea and a heavy head wind. The other boats out were manned by practical men, who reached port safely. HUDSON is a practical man, but his mate is not. It is possible that they may have been carried away to WALKARD, but there is also a chance that they have been blown right out to sea, in which case, considering the extremely cold state of the weather, they would have a very severe experience. They had little food on board, which of course is a very serious matter. A number of boats were on the look-out all day yesterday, but up to an early hour this morning no news was received of the absentees. HUDSON is a married man.

    3. Judy Weller The Supreme Court was occupied all day yesterday dealing with the RESTALL case. The case for the Crown closed at midday, and D. MILNE, of TARADALE, gave evidence on behalf of the prisoner, and said that during the four years for which RESTALL had worked for him he had borne a good character. It was quite possible that during that time the accused might have used arsenic to clear out a boiler, which would account for the presence of crystals in his pocket. MR LUSK addressed the jury at considerable length, dealing forcilby, clearly, and concisely with the many aspects of the complicated skein of evidence presented. In conclusion he asked the jury if they would have hung RESTALL in similar testimony if the poison had proved fatal, and, pointing out that his client had suffered severely both in mind and body while confined for nine months awaiting the final decision of the Court, said that if they condemned him in a verdict which would mean imprisonment now, he would probably die at the hands of the jury instead of the hangman........ After a retirement of 55 minutes they returned with a verdict of "Not Guilty" and the following rider: "This jury is unanimously of opinion that poisons kept on stations should be more carefully guarded under lock and key and in charge of managers only." The Court was then adjourned till 10 o'clock this morning, when besides other business sentence will be pronounced on Mrs LAWS.

    2. mattse165
    3. Judy Weller The second trial of John RESTALL for attempting to poison ten employees of the PATOKA station with arsenic, occupied the attention of the Supreme Court all day yesterday. The following jury was empanelled:- Messrs T.R. WALTON (foreman), E. CHEGWIDDEN, F.C. TONG, A.M. SCOTT, O. KROGH, D. WHYTOCK, E.J. ELLIOTT, J. MARSHALL, W. IRVINE, C. HUTCHINS, T.H. NESIBTT, and J. DEMPSEY. Mr LUSK again appeared for the defence. No new evidence was adduced, the statement of Mr HUMPRIES, Crown Prosecutor being to the effect that they sought to prove that the accused had placed arsenic in a stew in a spirit of revenge on the men at the PATOKA station, who had laughed when they heard that a jar of whisky which RESTELL had taken on the station had been taken away by the manager. Messrs T.C. SANDERSON, J.R. LANAUZE, and a number of the men had given evidence when the Court adjourned at 5.30 p.m. The trial will be resumed this morning.
