Judy Weller Isabella LAWS appeared at the Supreme Court yesterday morning for sentence on several charges of forgery....... Prisoner had nothing to say in answer to the usual challenge. His Honor said so much business was done with the banks, and so much trust had to be given to signatures, that he felt himself not at liberty to pass such a sentence as he might otherwise have done, in the case of a married woman who had occupied a respectable position and who had a large family depending on her exertions and help. He did not feel himself at liberty, however, to give way to that feeling of sympathy which one must necessarily have......... Prisoner would be sentenced to twelve calendar months' imprisonment with hard labor.
Judy Weller A flare which lighted up the sky in the vicinity of the port last night, elicited many inquiries of "where is the fire?" through the telephone and otherwise. It subsequently transpired that a small three-roomed cottage beyhond the Western Spit hotel had been burned, and that the Spit brigade had gone over, but without an engine, which would have been useless, considering that the place had been burning half-an-hour before being seen from the southern side of the port. The place, which belonged to Mr C. CARLSON, the mate of the Weka, was soon reduced to ashes, very little of the contents being saved. Mr CARLSON left on a trip along the coast last evening, and it is supposed that he left a candle burning. His wife was away in the country and nobody was in the house. The place was not insured so far as is known. The fire originated in the back room.
Plese amend above heading to WW1-Elaine

Judy Weller It seems almost certain that the unfortunate men HUDSON and NEALE, who went out fishing on Wednesday, have been lost. A strong wind and a heavy sea came on towards dusk, and several narrow escapes were experienced by other fisherman in getting into port. Mrs HUDSON is left with two little children, one two years and 11 months, and the other 11 months old, and is virtually penniless. She came from MELBOURNE with her husband two years ago, he then being possessed of a small amount of money. This was expended in assisting to fit up the fishing smack TOROS......... The case is an extreme one, and one that the charitably disposed in our midst would do well to make a special note of. Mr A.E. EAGLETON, who has interested himself in the case, intends personally canvassing this morning for an amoount which will suffice for present needs, and we feel sure that his efforts will meet with a liberal response.
