    3. HBH 1890 May 26 RUDDICK Mr RUDDICK, with some members of his family, drove to town in a buggy and pair to visit the cemetery, the vehicle being safely left by the gates. When the party were about to return Mr Ruddick attempted to get into the buggy first, so as to have command of the reins, but the horses suddenly started off and threw him down onto the road. The startled animals tore down the hill track alongside the cemetery at a fearful pace, the buggy jumping from side to side as the horses galloped over ruts and hillocks. Turning safely into Chaucer road, and thence into Emerson Street, the horses galloped at top speed into Hastings Street, and away in the direction of CLIVE, finally stopped near Awatoto by Messrs MORRISON and MURROW. No one was injured.

    3. HBH 1890 May 22 TRAIN The engine of the 4 20 train from Napier to Waipukurau yesterday met with a slight accident, which delayed the train for about an hour. This caused the train to be delayed at Te Aute, and it did not arrive in Napier until nearly 10 o'clock. We have received from Mr H MURDOCH a copy of his useful little work "How to make money by Patents." The book is smartly written, the author having the knack of imparting information without being in the slightest degree dull. Mechanics and others will find this work very interesting, and as it is published at a low price it should have a large sale.

    3. HBH 1890 May 22 Waipawa Court Captain PREECE paid his usually fortnightly visit to Waipawa yesterday, and held a sitting of the Magistrate's Court there. The police applied to have a prohibition order granted against Alexander GRANT, Sheep farmer of Takapau, and several constables deposed that he was given to excessive drinking. Mr LOUGHNAN, instructed by defendant's family, opposed the order being granted. His Worship said that as the persons most interested were against the order being made he should refuse to grant it, especially as under the circumstances it would fail to have the desired effect if it were granted. A few unimportant civil cases were then dealt with.

Charles SLADE, who has been "up" several times recently, was fined 10s and costs for drunkenness. For damaging property at the Spit, the property of Jessie M'VICAR, defendant was ordered to pay 1 pound 7s 6d, or to be imprisoned with hard labor for a week. The mean thief Patrick M'CLUSKEY, whose paltry and cowardly depredations were narrated in our last issue, got his deserts at the R.M. Court yesterday. There were four charged against him, as the goods he stole from the forecastle of the Flying Scud belonged to four seamen on that vessel. He was sentenced to three months' hard labor on each information, the sentences to be cumulative, so that Patrick M'CLUSKEY will have a year during which to ruminate.
