M'LEAN, it appears, is in a very bad way, his indulgence in Dr. Mortimer GRANVILLE's "friend of man" having brought on delirium tremens, and this, it is feared, is now complicated by an attack of congestion of the brain. HBH 18900 July 16 Crown Lands Guide We have received the Crown Lands Guide for the Hawke's Bay District, corrected up to the 30th of last month. Any person desiring a copy can obtain it free by applying at the Crown Lands Office, NAPIER. The list of sections show a great deal more than is generally supposed, and includes land open for lease, deferred payment purchase or purchase for cash, and the sections range from a rood up to 1500 acres in area. Some taking block up to 600 acres are scheduled in WAIPAWA and PATANGATA counties, the prices ranging from 10s an acre in the WEBER district for "fair land with uncleared bush," up to £1 an acre for "good land, bluestone formation," in the WAKARARA survey district.

Present: - Messrs SUTTON-Chair CONROY THOMPSON J P SMITH THOMAS LOUGHNAN Mr G S THORNTON and Mr LAURENSEN wrote asking for a few loads of shingle to be place on the roads leading to their cottages, which was ordered to be done as soon as possible Mr LOOLY, a contractor, wrote asking for a "draw" on his contract, but this was held over till next meeting. Messrs BAKER and TABUTEAU, as agents for Mr Joseph RHODES, owner of ROYSTON, wrote re draining into Muddy Creek. (This is classed as a private drain) The Board then adjourned, and immediately met again as a Board of Health, when the Inspector (Mr BURNS) was requested to call upon all keepers of pigs and dirty yards.

Resident Magistrate Court on Saturday Before Captain PREECE, R.M. David GREEN-charged with drunkenness Formation of an amalgamated chess and draught club at the Working Men's Club was completed at an adjourned meeting held on Saturday with Mr H C WILSON in the chair An accident of rather a serious nature happened on Saturday night at Hastings. A man named Thomas CARTER, having purchased some groceries, to keep them from the wet put them in a lollie tin and started to ride homewards. The horse he was riding (it is surmised) got frightened by the rattle of the tin and threw the rider, who fell heavily. CARTER was unconscious when picked up, and was found to be suffering from concussion of the brain. He was brought into town subsequently by Mr George SMITH, and conveyed to hospital. It having become known that Mr Allan Mc LEAN did not intend to seek re-election as a steward of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club. Owing to other business engagements occupying his time, several members of the club waited on that gentleman on Saturday and requested him to reconsider. It was pointed out that he had been connected with the club as a steward almost since its foundation, and had always proved himself a most useful and energetic member. After further consideration Mr Allan Mc LEAN Said he would once more allow himself to be nominated for office.
