HBH 1890 July 22 MANSFIELD Thomas and Court news The body of a man named Thomas MANSFIELD was found in the PIRIPIRI clearing near DANEVIRKE on Saturday. An inquest was to have been held at MANGATERA last evening. It is supposed that the man has died from exposure. Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday-before Captain PREECE R.M. Martin ROWE charged with receiving money by false pretences, the lad had a token resembling a shilling and he induced another boy to take it as a coin. The charge was dismissed. The Grand Jury yesterday found true bills in the following cases: - Joseph THOMPSON, alias James McNAMARA-larceny as a bailee Thomas BROWN-forging and uttering James NOLAN-Manslaughter Patrick John CAREY-assault William CANTELIN-two charges of stealing letters, two charges of receiving, and one of forging an endorse,emt In the case of Emily PYKE, charged with breaking and entering a dwelling, the Grand Jurty threw out the bill. E W GIBBS, for carrying explosives in a railway carriage, was fined 1s with 7s costs.

HBH 1890 July 23 BELL Sergeant-Major-HIGHMAN-Mc LEAN George WELLINGTON The Maritime Council, after fully discussing the marine officers' difficulty, interviewed both the Hon George Mc LEAN, the representative of the ship owners, and Captain HIGHMAN, secretary of the Marine Officers' Association. Sergeant-Major BELL died suddenly yesterday afternoon. On his return home from his office he stated to his wife that he felt in his usual health, but he laid down on the couch and subsequently went to bed, where in a few minutes he expired without uttering a word. For the past 18 months he had been suffering from Diabetes. He served ten years in India in the second Battalion of the Rifle Brigade, and was through the INDIAN mutiny in 1857 and the ASHANTEE war in 1873-74. He was afterwards stationed in various parts of IRELAND, and 16 years ago was sent out to NEW ZEALAND by the Home government as drill instructor, which position he filled up to the time of his death. Deceased will be accorded a military funeral..

HBH 1890 July 21 WILLIS Mr WILLIS, who lately took over the UNION Hotel at the Spit from Mr FLETCHER, died at 5 o'clock yesterday morning. He had been ailing during the past week. Deceased was an old settler in Hawke's Bay, and in 1874 carried out the plate laying contract of the line from NAPIER to PAKI PAKI. In conjunction with Mr WATERWORTH he also built the first reservoir the town possessed. He leaves a family of one son and four daughters to mourn his demise.
HBH 1890 July 21 Power John-ELLIS- and KEEN Captain PREECE, Coroner, held an inquest on Saturday afternoon at the Ferry Hotel, Western Spit, on the body of John POWER, whose drowning on Friday night was reported in Saturday's issue. Mr James NORTHE-foreman of the jury and constable HARVEY conducted the inquiry. From the evidence it appeared that the deceased had been a shepherd at Messrs DOLBEL Bros, station near PETANE, and that he had been drinking rather freely the last few days, but was very quiet and not all a man who would be likely to commit suicide. He called at the FERRY Hotel on Friday afternoon and had a glass of beer,.....more.and it was supposed that in the dark he tumbled into the water.....more..jury returned a verdict of "Found Drowned." Police have received information to the effect that a lad named ELLIS, about 12 years of age, was killed at WAINUI on Saturday by the falling of a tree. The race at the rink on Saturday night was a keenly contested one, and resulted in such a close finish between PARKINS and HERON that Mr FOLEY decided to give each a silver medal. Mr KEEN, who recently travelled under the nom de theatre of "Darkey Joe," is to be tendered a benefit by the members of the Variety Combination, of which organisation he is a member.

HBH 1890 July 19 TURNBULL plus WELLINGTON-Friday The HINEMOA will convey the body of the late Mr TURNBULL to TIMARU, where the funeral takes place. Libel action arising out of the late Petone Woollen Mill dispute was heard today. D McKENZIE, secretary of the outside union, charged G A BAILEY, shoemaker, Petone, with exhibiting in his shop window a document reflecting on the plaintiff. The accused was committed for trial. The ex-operative of the Petone Woollen Mill have written to the Trade and Labor Council demanding further strike pay, threatening in default of compliance the institution of legal proceedings.
HBH 1890 July 19 STREETER-BLACK Witnesses had a rough trip to WHAKATUTU, the rivers being high in flood and the roads very bad. This morning the prisoner named BLACK was taken to view the body. Immediately he entered the room the police sergeant asked him, "Do you know who that is?" He replied "Yes, Robert STREETER." Those were the only words that have fallen from him; otherwise he has throughout maintained a taciturn, stolid demeanour.
HBH 1890 July 19 Parliament The Bill introduced by Mr VERRALL to prevent lawyers in practice in New Zealand from being nominated or elected for any seat in the House was read a first time this afternoon amidst roars of laughter from nearly every member present. The Rotorua Railway Ministers are considering the expediency of providing funds for the continuation of the Rotorua Railway. Mr FERGUS proposed to appropriate funds to the Penrose double line. HUTCHISON Enquiry It is stated that Mr H D BELL is retained to appear on behalf of Ministers before the Hutchison committee Mr TURNBULL'S FUNERAL The Speaker informed the House this afternoon that he proposed, to leave the chair at 5 p.m. instead of 5.30 p.m., with the permission of the members, to take part in the funeral procession to the steamer conveying the late Mr TURNBULL'S remains at TIMARU, for that purpose, nearly every member in Wellington followed the hearse conveying the body to the steamer 'PENGUIN" which left for LYTTELTON about 6 o'clock. Later- TRIBUTE TO A DECEASED LEGISLATOR. Fully 100 members of the two Houses of Legislature followed the remains of the Late Mr TURNBULL from his late residence to the steamer this evening. Several Ministers and Sir George GREY were among the number.

HBH 1890 July 19 Poverty Bay Murder Gisborne-Friday The body of Robert STREETER was brought on a pack horse from the place of its discovery along a fearfully rough road to the Whakatutu Hotel 36 miles from here. Dr INNES conducted the post-mortem examination, and Mr BOOTH R.M. held the inquest. Mr W L REES appeared for the prisoner and Mrs STREETER. Constable LAW deposed Dr INNES-deposed Elizabeth STREETER gave evidence and stated that the body was that of her husband and she last saw him alive five months ago. Arthur PARKINSON and Frank MACDONALD identified the body as that of STREETER. BLACK will be bought before a Magistrate on Friday.
