    3. HBH 1892 Sept 10 2 Brown Rev George The Rev. George BROWN, D.D., F.R.G.S., general secretary of the Australian Wesleyan Board of Foreign Missions, will shortly pay a visit to Napier, when he will preach and lecture in Trinity Church. Dr. BROWN is widely known as one of the most eminent of living missionaries. In his pioneer labours in New Britain, New Ireland, and more recently in British New Guinea, he has displayed rare qualities of heroism and devotion to a noble cause, while it has been given to few missionaries to see such rapid changes wrought under the influence of Christianity among the cannibal tribes of the South Pacific.

    3. HB Herald, June 7, 1894 Messrs BAKER and TABUTEAU yesterday offered for sale by auction lot 3, part of town section 311, Hastings-street. The section, which has a frontage of 33 feet by a depth of 100 feet, has on it a four-roomed cottage, and the property was put up at auction subject to a mortgage of £200. The property was bought in by the mortgagee, Mr J.G. GILBERD. Yesterday morning at Hastings Mr H. NAPHTALI sustained a serious shaking and severe injuries to both legs through being knocked down by a baker's cart. The boy in charge of the cart was driving at a rapid rate over the railway crossing at Heretaunga-street, and Mr NAPHTALI, who was crossing the road, was knocked down. An information against the boy for reckless driving was at once lodged, and several persons who saw the affair came forward and volunteered their evidence. The case will probably be heard on the 14th instant.

    3. HB Herald, June 8, 1894 We yesterday stated that a house sold by auction by Messrs BAKER and TABUTEAU had been bought in by the mortgagee, Mr J.G. GILBERD. We are requested to say that he was only mortgagee in his capacity of trustee for the Court of Foresters. We have received from Mr E.J. MOUNTIER a mounted photograph of his drawing of Napier in the year 1864. This picture, in addition to its artistic merits, has a decided historic value. The contrast between the shingle beach of thirty years ago, with its few unpretentious edifices, and the Napier of to-day, constitutes an object lesson in the progress of this district and of the colony as a whole.

    3. HB Herald, June 9, 1894 SHIPPING NEWS: Passenger departures - June 8 - Australia, s.s., for Northern ports. Passengers - Messrs BECK, ROBERTSON, and PENDER; Master JOHNSON. At the general meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club yesterday, the following new members were elected:- Dr. HAIGH, Messrs S. CHARLTON, G.L. SUTHERLAND, C.L. MACKERSEY, and AKUHATA. Some time after dark last night considerable damage was done to the ornamental iron fence surrounding Mr WATERWORTH's monumental masonry yard in Clive-square. The miscreant who did this must have been a strong man or else used a crowbar or similar instrument. A panel of the fence was torn out, and the Oamaru stone coping, fastened to the brickwork by an iron bolt going through the wall into the earth, was also dislodged. Possibly the perperator of this outrage may be the one who damaged the Herald office some days ago. It is very evident that we have not enough police protection. Waipawa - It is stated that Mr B.B. JOHNSON has fallen in for a handsome fortune by the death of his uncle, and that he left by the Ionic from Lyttelton the other day en route for his home in Armagh, Ireland. His many friends will be glad to hear of Mr JOHNSON's prospertiy. The competition for the scholarships in connection with the Cathedral choir has now been concluded. Twenty-four boys competed, and the scholarships have been awarded to the following choristers: - Masters H. TANKARD, E. BOURGEOIS, H. MOUNTEIR, and G. HUNT.

    3. HB Herald, June 5, 1894 Dr. BAKEWELL announces in our advertising columns that as he is leaving Napier at the end of this week he can only be consulted until Thursday evening. At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Mr TURNBULL, S.M., Margaret HUNTER, on remand charged with the larceny of underclothing, was sentenced to seven days' hard labor. The Hawke's Bay hounds met on Saturday at Flaxmere Gate. There was a large turn-out, and a good run of some miles over a course including portions of the properties of Messrs WILLIAMS, ORMOND, and RUSSELL. There were a few large fences, but all were negotiated safely, the run being a very pleasant one. The many friends of Mr D.A. STURROCK will be glad to learn that the committee of the Blenheim school district have unanimously recommended his appointment to be head-master of the large school there. Mr STURROCK will be missed in Napier. His work at the Napier school has been high-class, and he has also been prominent in musical circles. The Blenheim Board of Education meet to-morrow, and will no doubt adopt the recommendation.
