    3. HBH 1892 September 17 DICKSON Mr P.H.DICKSON (some time a settler at PAPAKURA, and son-in-law to Captain CAMPBELL of the s.s. Kiwi) with his wife are travelling for health, and have lately arrived in SOUTH AFRICA, where they intend staying a few months. Captain CAMPBELL has just received a letter from his daughter, in which she records her astonishment at the fact that on landing at NATAL, the first person to meet her was Mr James SIDEY, of NAPIER. It made her feel nearer home, and think that the world was not so very big after all. She says that Mr SIDEY was visiting NATAL on a tour of inspection, his head-quarters being at Cape Town.

    3. HB Herald, Tues. June 26, 1894 Mr S. EVISON, who formerly kept the Railway Hotel at the Spit, died yesterday at Gisborne. So long back as 38 years ago Mr EVISON kept a public-house in Napier, his hostelry being known as the Victoria, and situated in Onepoto Gully. The deceased came to Hawke's Bay in 1858, with the 65th Foot, otherwise the "Bengal Tigers." He was through the Waikato war. A civil case was waltzed through in exceptionally fast time at the Supreme Court yesterday. James THOMPSON sued to recover £100 from George MERRITT, as rent for land the property of plaintiff. He also sued for an order of the Court compelling defendant to give up possession of the land, legal notice to quit which had been served upon him. Defendant did not appear. Mr CORNFORD, who appeared for plaintiff, called evidence to prove the ownership of the land and the serving of the notice to quit upon MERRITT. The Chief Justice reserved his decision till to-morrow.

Robert KENNEDY, similarly charged, was convicted and discharged with a caution. Mr John WHITE, whose death is referred to by our Waipawa correspondent, was one of the earliest of the pioneer settlers of Hawke's Bay. His career was a good illustration of what can be achieved by sagacity allied to perseverance. His widow and family will have the sympathy of a wide circle in their bereavement. A good number of the friends of Mr W.E. CHAPMAN, of Messrs WILLIAMS and KETTLE, Limited, assembled at the Spit on Saturday to wish him bon voyage, as he was starting on a holiday trip to Australia. Mr CHAPMAN has been engaged for the past nine years at the port, where he has earned the esteem of a large circle by his never failing courtesy and good humor.
