I have found what may be my missing ancestor. William Robert McKay was a shipwright in NSW in 1837 -42 and was still in Sydney up to 1848 when he and his wife went missing. I have found a William R McKay, shipwright in 1851 in the list of men eligible to serve on juries in the Auckland area. He is based at Freeman's Bay. Can anyone please advise how I can corroborate this or maybe find further information in electoral rolls etc. It is believed his wife Mary Ann McKay died in Auckland in 1901 (from an unsubstantiated family tree written in 1970) but have been unable to find her in the index of deaths. The same family tree states William Robert McKay died in 1875 but no place given. We do know that their granddaughter was living in Northcote up to her death in 1928. Would appreciate some help on which direction to go from here. Many thanks Joy in Queensland
Hi Joy There is no William Robert McKAY on the NZ death indexes for 1875. I suggest you look through the online cemetery records at Auckland city Libraries http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/findyoursubject/digitallibrary/digitall ibrary.htm. The North Shore ones are online too. There is a Mary Ann McKAY in Auckland on the 1893 electoral roll (the first one women appear on) Surname MCKAY Given Name Mary Ann Number 4114 Electorate Waitemata Voting Qualification Residential Residential Address Lower Matakana Occupation Postmistress Regards Jeni -----Original Message----- From: nz-auckland-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nz-auckland-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Joy Bruce Sent: Wednesday, 15 August 2007 7:57 PM To: NZ-AUCKLAND@rootsweb.com Subject: [NZ-AUCKLAND] Shipwright in 1851 I have found what may be my missing ancestor.
