The "bloke" would have caught the infection from his wife - childbirth fever was simply a name for another infection that women caught when they were vulnerable following childbirth and its associated trauma. It was mostly to do with poor sanitation and lack of cleanliness and was highly infectious. -----Original Message----- From: nz-auckland-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nz-auckland-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Chris Ward Sent: 10 June 2007 14:09 To: nz-auckland@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NZ-AUCKLAND] 1851 AUCKLAND DEATHS A bloke dying from childbirth fever! And also spread by doctors not washing their hands. And men did die from it. A more correct term is puerperal fever which is a rise in temperature, following labour, caused by an infection commonly on the inside surface of the uterus after separation of the placenta. Men don't go into labour nor do they have a uterus!! It could be spread from woman to woman by midwives or doctors who were not scrupulous in their cleanliness. I would reply to Chris Ward off list but, unfortunately, there is no way I can do so. Have you never heard of any man getting an infection through a cut or other wound? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Ward" <ceejay@internode.on.net> To: <nz-auckland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 10, 2007 10:23 AM Subject: Re: [NZ-AUCKLAND] 1851 AUCKLAND DEATHS >A more correct term is puerperal fever which is a rise in temperature, > following labour, caused by an infection commonly on the inside surface of > the uterus after separation of the placenta. Hi all I did quite a bit of in-depth googling on this and have seen nothing on various websites (medical and dissertations) that gave any suggestion that men died from puerperal fever. It's an impossiblity as it's an infection of the uterus, which men don't have, or Placental remnants which again men don't have.. Interesting reading on the following; Quote from http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/p/puerperal_fever/basics.htm "Patient Profile for Puerperal fever: Women who gave birth within 10 days to 2 weeks Gender Profile for Puerperal fever: Women only " "What is Puerperal fever? a.. Delayed uterine infection after childbirth b.. serious form of septicemia contracted by a woman during childbirth or abortion (usually attributable to unsanitary conditions); formerly widespread but now uncommon" Regards Andy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathleen Ogg-Moss" <koggmoss@sympatico.ca> To: <nz-auckland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 10, 2007 6:42 PM Subject: Re: [NZ-AUCKLAND] 1851 AUCKLAND DEATHS >I would reply to Chris Ward off list but, unfortunately, there is no way I > can do so.
