Nothing fresh is reported regarding MATAAFA'S movements. MALIETOA is ill. The collection of the Samoan poll-tax in copra has been deferred for a short time. Some concern is manifested by the European residents of Apia at the announcement that the Oceanic Steamship Company's mail steamers will possibly not call at Apia in future. At the Supreme Court today a youth named Ernest LAWSON was sentenced to twelve month's imprisonment with hard labor on two charges of housebreaking at Ponsonby. James WATSON, who had been twenty-five times convicted of offences, was sentenced to five years' penal servitude for the theft of a swag from a boarding house. The prisoner had only been five days out of gaol when he stole the swag. Frederick WILLIAMS, a young man, who pleaded guilty to stealing a horse, and who received an excellent character from several witnesses, was released on probation. The trial of Robert BUTLER, charged with the murder of Arthur KATTAN of Helene Bay, is to begin tomorrow. The manager of the government experimental nursery at Whangarei, Mr W. HESLOP, announces that a number of forest trees will be given from the nursery to school committees or others wishing to inaugurate an arbour day.
