I have a person in the 1841 census, occupation 'Soldier' living there - Gerald MURTAGH b. abt 1826 in Ireland. 1849 he is married (in the same district) to Harriet MAPEL and then went to New Zealand. Hi Army records are held in the National Archives in Kew (suburbs of London, England) There is an index of soldiers discharged before 1854 in the online catalogue but I cannot find your Gerald on it. (his surname probably has a lot of variants) His 1849 marriage certificate should give you his own occupation and his father's name and occupation. If Gerald is still in the army at this point it might even give you his regiment. If he went out to NZ as a soldier then knowing his regiment might help to track down when and where he went. Tracing soldiers and mariners at the National Archives usually needs a personal visit or the employment of a professional researcher. Irene
