The New Zealander Page 1 July 5 1845 http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ THREE POUNDS REWARD Whereas, on the 8th or 9th of June, some evil disposed person or persons, maliciously houghed and cupled my Cows, when running about Remuwera: - Any person or persons giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the party or parties so offending, will receive the above award. WILLIAM GAMBLE Auckland, 17th June, 1845 I've been unable to find out what the words "houghed" and "cupled" mean. Can anybody shed any light on this? Please feel free to send or forward this post to any list or individual who may have an interest in it. Regards Maureen Donwen
Maureen I think this must refer to harm done to the cows,eg. 'Houghed, houghing, houghs. To hock or hamstring' (Dictionary) Haven't found 'cupled' yet but feel it may be to do with bleeding, -just a guess.
