The New Zealander Page 3 December 3 1851 http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT On Monday, a man named THOMAS HILL was charged , by Mrs. VERCOE, a tavern keeper in Fort-Street, with having given her a number of counterfeit sixpencees, in payment for a bottle of rum that she sold to him on Sunday last. He was traced to his lodging, by a policeman, on the same evening, and a large number of similar sixpencees to those he had given for the rum were found in his pocket; and afterward, the same officer proceeded on board a small vessel, in which HILL had came down the river, and found a lump of pewter, a spoon, and a mould in his chest. These were produced in Court. The prisoner made no defense, and was remanded. a person named JOHN DUNCAN, who had also been drinking at Vercoe's on Sunday, was charged with having two of these base coins in his possession.
