I am trying to find out about adoption records. A family member is noted on the papers past as born to what is believed to be the grandparents in New Zealand. The death certificate also shows this also. No notification of birth record under all surnames available. Years later a member of the family said that this child was a step brother and not an uncle as first thought (and records show). Person in question is: Ian Neil McMilne - born 23 May 1929 at St Helen's Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand died 5 September 1930 Avondale, Auckland. buried with no headstone. ? buried in the same grave as Rose McMilne - ? sister ? nephew. Please Help Michelle Harte Whakatane, New Zealand NZSG: 25317 [email protected]
Hi all, an aunt, now in her 80's recalls meeting up with an Ernie ALLEN (not sure of the exact spelling of his surname) she only knew him as Ernie and when she and her friends went by boat in 1951 to Sydney, it had passengers on it going to the UK and Ernie was one of them. He went on with his friends to the UK and she got off in Sydney with her friends. Apparently he was a 'Sheep Farmer from the South Island' and assumes the Ernie was shortened from Ernest, can't think of what else it would be. Any help would be much appreciated. Kind regards, Brenda

Thank you Sylvia, imagine putting a 2 year old in a class of much older children, poor little things... Yes, big family, no resources for a maid or a nanny, I can see why they might try to get them enrolled to school early. hi all, I wondered if someone knows why or if a 2 or 3 year old would be enrolled in a London Schoo (1870's to 1890's). Also occasional 4 year olds. I have several records of 2 and 3 year olds being enrolled and wondered if the school was not in the usual sense of school as we understand it but perhaps a kind of early Barnardo's or care place and if so if there would be more records than just the enrollments and discharges, and often re-enrollments. Did they have kindergartens then or pre-schools ?? The schools and details I have with little one's being admitted are below. Any suggestions very welcome. Hell Brenda, I had a similar incident when my great grandparents sent their many children to school before the age of five years. Five years of age was the entry age for the schools in Yorkshire as I understand the rest of England. My ancestors in question had to remove their children from school when it was discovered they were not of the correct 'entry' age. I wonder if this was the same scenario for your underage scholars? Because of the large number of children in families during the 18th and 19th century, parents would no doubt welcome relief if their children were taken care of for best part of the day. Hello Brenda, I do have Ancestry Brenda but can't find anything. Would appreciate new eyes taking a look however. Much appreciated. My ancestor is Easton Salter born 1809. (an unusual forename as you can see.) He arrived in Auckland NZ, 23 July 1872 sailing on the Coronilla. Died Auckland September 1880 age 71 yrs. Up until he left England he was not married but can't find even a marriage or any sign of him in NZ until finding his death record 1880. Before leaving England census showed him as a shoemaker. Thanks very much for the help Brenda. Hi Sylvia, This is not particular to Auckland, but the whole country... The national census is taken every five years - usually - but the data has not been kept like it has in some other countries. There are exceptions in the five-year rule, such as the 2011 census being delayed untl March 2013 because of the earthquakes in Christchurch. There are electoral rolls available. The original paper rolls are often found in libraries around the country - I know that's not much use to you in Canada. Some years of particular interest have been published on CD by the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) and are available for sale on their site. Ancestry also has the electoral rolls up to 1981. Some are indexed, others aren't yet. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy sylvia said the following on 21/05/2012 11:14 a.m.: > Hello, > Can anyone tell me if there are electoral rolls and/or census for Auckland > NZ between years 1872 -1880? > > Thanks a lot. > Sylvia > BC Canada
Hi Wendy, Thanks a lot for that info. I will try the genealogy link. My ancestor arrived 1872 and died 1880. Other than his death record I cannot find anything about him so this link might be a huge help. Thanks again. A brilliant suggestion Brenda, this will go into my files. Alas in this case the missing letter space is blank, so perhaps faint on the original copy too.Appreciate your reply. penne ----->

Hi Penne, I too have found other documents faint and unclear and after saving them I make sure that I work on a duplicate copy, and I (when in Preview) go to TOOLS and 'adjust colour'. Then I click on TINT and drag it to the purple colour. It makes the document PURPLE but with black writing. Then I move increase and decrease the levels of black saturation and its amazing what shows up. Another is to move it to SEPIA but I have used this trial and error method to discover information on parish recordings that have been through a fire so although it sounds a bit of a fiddle it is worth the effort and a lot of fun too. As I say, I always create a duplicate of the downloaded document and then you always have an original. It you get stuck email me off list and send me a copy of the article and I will see what I can do. cheers Brenda On 17/05/2012, at 10:01 AM, Penne wrote: > With the addition of some more years of the The Auckland Star, I > find an article of interest in one issue. With the addition of some more years of the The Auckland Star, I find an article of interest in one issue. However the print is faint and unclear, right where the one name of interest is printed. I expect a film of this paper will be in the Auckland City Library, but expect their film will be the same as that which is now digitised, would this be so?? Hi all, would SKS know of the registration or otherwise, Christening records for instance, of children born to military families overseas ? I know that sometimes there are registrations at Embassies if couples marry in other countries. Thinking of Military, but of course there are the three M's Missionary's Military and Merchants - based in Trichinopoly (Tiruchirappalli), India, child born July 1864 - LEE Eleanor Justine it is thought her parents came to NZ with the Military from thereabouts. I did find a very helpful web page 'India to New Zealand' cached, as the original web page seems to have disappeared http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nzbound/india.htm but can't find a LEE family there. Eleanor Justine married in Gisborne NZ 1882 to John ADEANE and the 'Justine' part of her name seems significant as that name has continued down through her descendants. I have access to the Ancestry.com but can't see my way around what I should be looking for. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers Brenda Hamilton New Zealand
