Hi Viv, You may find these web sites useful and/or interesting... BDM Online - Historical Records (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/) Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM, http://www.bdm.govt.nz/) PapersPast (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/) Archway (http://archway.archives.govt.nz/), the online index for Archives New Zealand (http://www.archives.govt.nz/) New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) The first BDM site is, as the name suggests, for "historical" events only. You can order copies online if you wish, or by other means if you prefer - details are on the web site. You'll also find information there about what data was collected, which expanded over time. Some of the earliest events aren't very useful to us, such as early marriages that don't record details about the parents, so it pays to check. It is possible to order more recent events, you just can't do it online. The BDM site has information about this, and a form you can print and complete to place an order. If you do order, get the "printout" and not the legal certificate. Again, there's information on the web site about the differences. For most years the printout is cheaper, and it is often simply a photocopy of the Registrar's book, much like English certificates only on plain paper. NZ certificates contain only the data that the law says they must contain, which is not always all that was recorded at the time, and is typed up when ordered so you're exposing yourself to the potential risk of further transcription errors. Archway is not a complete index, but is being constantly updated, so if you don't find what you're looking for and want to be sure you can write to Archives and ask for a search. It may cost a fee, I'm not sure about that. Files that are held at Archives are free to view in person at the office holding it - assuming there are no viewing restrictions, which are shown on Archway or the archivist will tell you about them - so you can go in person or ask a friend to visit for you. Digital cameras are allowed, no flash. Photocopies can be ordered; if you're there in person you can request particular pages of a file, or if you order remotely there may be a flat rate charge, or a per-page charge, depending on the type of file. NZSG has some great collections available to its members. The Certificates Collection contains thousands of documents that have been donated by members, and copies are provided for the cost of an envelope and return postage. The Research Service will look up the holdings of the library for you - especially useful for overseas members as they can't borrow from the library. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard *** Please reply to the list *** -- Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Ewendyh65/>
Hi List Alexander DAWSON was born in 1887 in Glasgow Scotland and was the son of Robert DAWSON and Elizabeth CARUTHERS. Alexander possibly emigrated to New Zealand after the death of his father in 1908. Alexander returned to Scotland for a brief visit in 1937 and stayed with his niece Jean BURNS (ms McMAHON) Information from the NZHerald states that Alexander was a watersider worker and married Elizabeth Hetty ? (surname and date unknown) Alexander was possibly Elizabeth's second husband as he is described as having two step children Bill and Nola KING (HUNTLY). He had 3 grandchildren(step) Marilyn, Grant and Julie. He died in New Lynn, Auckland March 1956 and his ashes were scattered at Waikumete Cemetery. Would be interested to learn more about my grt uncle's life/family in New Zealand. Regards Viv Buck Dorset-England

Hi Alison, > I am looking for the death notice of my gggrandmother, Winifred McCabe (nee Carey)and wife of William McCabe. Her official death certificate states that she died on July 19th, 1880 in Auckland Have you tried PapersPast (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/)? Also, try A Memory Tree (http://www.amemorytree.co.nz/). I can't think of any other online resources at the moment that might help you. Otherwise, you may need to contact a library and ask them to help you to access their physical archives, which will probably cost you a fee of some sort. Try National Library of New Zealand (http://www.natlib.govt.nz/) or Auckland City Libraries (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com//) for that. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard *** Please reply to the list *** -- Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Ewendyh65/>
I am looking for the death notice of my gggrandmother, Winifred McCabe (nee Carey)and wife of William McCabe. Her official death certificate states that she died on July 19th, 1880 in Auckland but I found this in the Symonds Street Cemetery Index (Auckland City Library) where she was buried: The Anglican Sexton's list has Mrs McCabe at Block H 372. The St Paul's register has Winifred McCabe buried 21 July 1880 aged 33 years of Pitt Street. An amendment to the Sexton's list has Winifred McCabe died 11 July 1880. McCabe, Winifred, d.1880 Symonds Street Cemetery Notes: The Anglican Memorial has Mrs Winifred McCabe 11.7.1880. The date range looks like Jul 11-19th. I would be happy to trade a look up here in the United States. Thanks. Alison

The following notices as to missing friends are from Lloyds Weekly of December 6th:- George Henry STOCKDALL left CROYDON for NEW ZEALAND in 1876; last heard of in 1876. His eldest sister inquires. Alfred TAYLOR was in HAWKE'S BAY, NEW ZEALAND, six years ago. Sister seeks tidings. Mrs Emma JUNCKER, of ACTON, was last heard of in August, 1881, at Barbadoes street, CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND. Sister (Mrs BRIGGS) asks. William HOARE left SELLING for CANTERBURY, NEW ZEALAND, in 1873. Brother Moses inquires. James HARRIS left LONDON for NEW ZEALAND about 1854; last heard of at Tasman street, NELSON, NEW ZEALAND, nine years ago. Brother Fred asks.
Jeremiah CAREY, Cpl 2196 from Nenagh Ireland), formerly a 'Lab'; enlisted 29 March, 1832; discharged in Auckland 26 May 1856; pensioned; ships were the ORATOR (left Deptford England 14 July 1843 arrived Sydney 14 Dec 1843, left Sydney on the PESTONJEE BOMANJEE 30 June 1847, arrived Auckland 12 Jul 1847. (page 51 of Hughes). This tells us quite a lot about him that you would be able to supplement from reading a copy of Michael Barthorp' "To face the Daring Maoris." You man has been a guard on a convict ship to Australia where he joined / reinforced the garrison at Parramatta in West Sydney before going to NZ after Heke's "Northern Rebellion" in 1845. He would have arrived in Auckland and then probably gone to the Bay of Islands. You would need to research the muster roll to determine this. He has then stayed on in NZ after being pensioned off rather than return to UK. You should be able to find a lot about this chap but may need to get a UK-based researcher to help you. I can provide a name of a very reputable researcher who is skilled. As you are in the US, it is unlikely you will have access to the muster rolls unless you can order into your library. They are easy to use and can be used to build up your man's background. I also recommend you obtain a copy of Barthorp to read. This gives a lot of background information on the regiment's time in NZ - although much is based around the period 1844 - 1848. I have a small lookup in the US that I will send separately. Dr. REED, formerly of WAIPAWA and HAWERA, has left the latter town and has commenced his practice at PALMERSTON NORTH. Prior to leaving HAWERA he was entertained at a dinner by leading residents and presented with an address and piece of plate. Word has been received of the death of Mr Charles J. DEARIE, formerly of the THAMES, which took place at Te AROHA. Mr DEARIE was an old colonist, being a resident of NAPIER in the early days, and subsequently of COROMANDEL, where he managed a battery. For about 12 years he resided at the THAMES, being employed as Government Land Purchase Officer and Allocator of Native Revenue, but three years ago failing health compelled him to relinquish his post and proceed to Te AROHA, where he had a small farm.
Messrs J.W. NEAL and F.W. WILLIAMS and Captain DAVIDSON are the retiring members of the NAPIER Harbor Board. Nominations close on the 27th instant, and an election, if necessary, will be held on February 8th. The before-mentioned members are all eligible for re-election. The committees selected to chose a monument which is to be erected in the NAPIER cemetery over the grave of the late Mr Bright COOPER met yesterday. They selected one from the yard of Mr T. WATERWORTH, who has been entrusted with the work, which will be proceeded with at once. Quite a gloom was caste over the TAKAPAU township on Sunday morning last when it became known that Mr Charles GIBSON had died suddenly at his residence at ORUAWHARE. The late Mr GIBSON was a big, srong, robust man, of a most cheerful disposition. He came to NEW ZEALAND between 22 and 23 years ago, and entered the employ of Mr Sydney JOHNSTON, on ORUAWHARE, where he remained till his death; holding the position for a number of years of head shepherd.
