    1. Re: [NZ-AUCKLAND] Boothman family
    2. Wendy, the links and the thoughts which you have posted are valuable. However I disagree with you about multiple-posting to lists. THIS is the ONLY NZ list to which I am su bscribed. I have a very peripheral interest in BOOTHMANs whom I know absolutely nothing about, on my wife's side, a long way back, in England. If Lyn had followed your advice and posted to any other ONE NZ list, and received a satisfactory answer from there, I might never have seen her posting; until many years hence, when I MIGHT get around to conducting a search of all rootsweb lists trying to find mention of the surname. And IF I had been subscribed to all of those NZ lists to which she posted the question, then I would see them all arranged in a row in my inbox, and know that I could quickly and easily delete all except the first one -- after a quick check of the second one to confirm that it was identical to the first. As in most things in life, we all see the world differently. I am merely expressing my contrary opinion in the interests of helping empathy along a little. I enjoy this list greatly, and if you are the list admin, then I thank you for hosting such a friendly list, which I recently promoted on one of my Irish lists for its friendly helpfulness. 2. Lyn Gadsby
    3. I have information which I am trying to verify about John Boothman, maybe wife Emma, who with 3 of their children went to live in NZ in the mid 1890's. John may have died in NZ. I have information that the children married in NZ - Elizabeth Boothman married John Pearson Horton in 1904, and had a son William Horton born in 1908. Sophia Boothman married a Peter Henry McIntosh in 1906. David Boothman married an Ethel May Glass in 1917. Any help would be much appreciated. Lyn

    3. Hi Jenny, > A pioneer register for Shoalhaven, NSW has John ROBERTSON, b.1830, Glasgow, Scotland, marrying Mary CROWTHER, b.c.1832, in Auckland on 17 Jun 1851. Can somebody confirm this actually happened& confirm this date for me please? > At BDM Online - Historical Records (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/) there is a marriage listed in 1851 for a Mary CROWTHER, where there is no groom's name listed (registration 1851/154). Very odd, it seems, until you realise that marriages in New Zealand weren't under government control until 1855 (with the implementation of the Marriage Act 1854). You can purchase copies of registrations on that site. Be sure to get the printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes. (I explain why at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NEW-ZEALAND/2010-04/1272342580). I don't know what their pre-1855 record will show - you may like to make enquiries before purchasing from there. Certainly, the earliest marriages in New Zealand didn't record parents' names, so are of limited use for family history research. I have the NZSG CD "New Zealand Marriages 1836-1956" (http://www.genealogy.org.nz/Sales_11.aspx?CategoryId=11) here, and it lists a marriage between a Mary CROWTHER and John ROBERTSON which took place in 1851-1852 (folio 0031). It is likely referring to the same record as the one at BDM, but we can't tell from here for sure. If you are a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) you should enquire with their "Pre-1856 Marriage Collection" officer about this marriage. Also, don't forget to check with their Certificates Collection before making any purchases from BDM - it's much cheaper, and a good use of your society membership. > Also is there an Isaiah CROWTHER& Jane, his wife& daughter, Mary CROWTHER, on the shipping from Bradford, Yorkshire, UK before 1851? To which port? Keep in mind that you've posted to a mailing list dedicated to Auckland connections; it may be more appropriate to post to the Rootsweb New Zealand mailing list (http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/NZL/NEW-ZEALAND.html) for assistance. My favourite sites for shipping, in no particular order, are: Denise & Peter's "Our Stuff" (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ourstuff/) Olwyn's "NZ Bound" (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nzbound/) Gavin's "Ships to NZ" (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~shipstonz/) Corey's "Yesteryears" (http://www.yesteryears.co.nz/) Ancestors On Board (http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/) Public Record Office Victoria (http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/) You may find something on your people at one of these. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard **I have no personal interest in the name(s) mentioned here** *** Please reply to the list *** -- Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Ewendyh65/>
