Hi Sylvia, > My ancestor EASTON SALTER arrived in Auckland NZ 1872& died Christchurch 1880. I have no track of him between these dates& wonder if there are any census records or Land owner records for this time. There are virtually no census records available in New Zealand. There is a copy of Easton SALTER's death certificate held at the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/). If you are a current member, you can request a copy of it for the price of return postage and envelopes. See the members' area of the web site for details of accessing the collection. Have you taken a look at the New Zealand electoral rolls held at Ancestry? Their collection covers 1853 to 1981, so you may find your man there. The only other resource I can think of right now (at the very sluggish end of the year on a warm humid afternoon) is directories. I don't have any here covering the time your man was in the country, sorry. But perhaps others can look for you, or if you're a member of NZSG you can make use of their free Research Service to have library holdings checked for you (I gather from your email address that you're in Canada, and overseas members cannot borrow from the library, so the Research Service is an excellent way of making good use of your membership fee). Lastly, since your man moved from one area of the country to another, you may like to try asking your questions on a forum where there may be more people who can help, such as the Rootsweb New Zealand list (http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/NZL/NEW-ZEALAND.html). If you post there, you may like to mention that you've already posted to this list (http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NZ-AUCKLAND/2011-12/1325283533) so people can check the archive to see what answers you've already received. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard *** Please reply to the list *** -- Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Ewendyh65/>
Thank you so much, however I do have this info but wanted to discover if he married & where he lived etc. He left England with a considerable amount of money & I wondered if he purchased land in Auckland or Christchurch? There appears to be no Land owner records to search. He was in NZ from only 1772 - 1880 Thanks again Sylvia BC Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: "Penne" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 30, 2011 10:19 PM Subject: Re: [NZ-AUCKLAND] census or land owners list > Sylvia I think this could be him, died Auckland > > > Cemetery Records - Symonds Street and St Stephens > > Your search found 1 records > [1 of 1] > Abstract The Anglican St Paul's register has Easton Salter or Slater > buried 14 September 1880, aged 71 years from the Hospital. Thank you so much Jordan, I spent one whole day on PAPERS PAST & THE TRUTH & never came up with anything. Also I purchased his death cert from NZ but that only told me his occupation labourer & cause of death - general debility...very vague. I would like to have known if he ever married etc. Well on to the next search.... Happy New Year but on reflection you have celebrated yours by now. Here on the west coast of Canada (BC) we are the last to celebrate. In any event a healthy 2012. thanks again Sylvia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jordan" <[email protected]> To: "George Harte" <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 30, 2011 7:52 PM Subject: Re: [NZ-AUCKLAND] MISS NEW ZEALAND CONTESTANTS 1926 IN AUCKLAND > Hi George > > You could try the NZ National Library's PapersPast: > http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast > > You can limit your search by dates, region or publication title. > > This article from the New Zealand edition of Truth gives some > information about the competition: > http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=NZTR19261202.2.36.2&e=-------10--1----2-- > http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=NZTR19261111.2.3&e=-------10--1----0-- > >>From those it would seem that the pageant was organised either by or > on behalf of a private corporation and I would be very surprised if > any archives have survived. > > There is this website http://missnzl.blog.com/ but its world seems to > begin in 1956. > > There appears to be a scholarly treatment of the 1926 Miss New Zealand > pageant in Sandra Coney, "Standing in the Sunshine: A History of New > Zealand Women Since They Won the Vote", Auckland, 1993, pp 162-63 > according to http://www.api-network.com/main/pdf/scholars/jas71_daley.pdf > at footnote 93. Hi George You could try the NZ National Library's PapersPast: http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast You can limit your search by dates, region or publication title. This article from the New Zealand edition of Truth gives some information about the competition: http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=NZTR19261202.2.36.2&e=-------10--1----2-- http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=NZTR19261111.2.3&e=-------10--1----0-- >From those it would seem that the pageant was organised either by or on behalf of a private corporation and I would be very surprised if any archives have survived. There is this website http://missnzl.blog.com/ but its world seems to begin in 1956. There appears to be a scholarly treatment of the 1926 Miss New Zealand pageant in Sandra Coney, "Standing in the Sunshine: A History of New Zealand Women Since They Won the Vote", Auckland, 1993, pp 162-63 according to http://www.api-network.com/main/pdf/scholars/jas71_daley.pdf at footnote 93. Your local library will be able to help you find a copy of that. Lester Sinclair has been mentioned on Rootsweb this year and others researching him may be willing to share research: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NEW-ZEALAND/2011-05/1306056694 Hope this helps. I am seeking any information that may be out there regarding Agnes BROOKS (née GLOVER) who died in Auckland in 1943 and her daughter (Agnes) Myrtle BROOKS who died in Auckland in 1999. Agnes was a daughter of William and Agnes GLOVER who lived for many years in Stafford and Hokitika on the West Coast. This couple were my maternal GG grandparents. I had thought that I had found a source, a Mrs Watkinson, however our correspondence dried up and I fear that she may have become unable to continue. I would be most grateful if anyone can assist me in this search. Cheers Peter Melbourne

Hi Fay Thankyou for taking an interest and trying to help. That is the one I mentioned in the previous post. Is that date of 1889 the date of the Will or the date of Probate as the William I am looking for died in 1890 so if that is Probate or death date it cannot be the one I am after. There was another who died in August 1889 but he is not the one I want. Regards Lyn In Oz.
Forgot to mention I did find William Trimble's burial Purewa Cemetery 16 Oct 1890 aged 71. Lyn In Oz.
Thanks Sandra I did find those sites but couldn't figure out how you could get copies without going there. The only option it seemed was to order it to the reading rooms but I have finally found the order form and price list now. There is a Will for a William Trimble in 1889 but I think this is a younger one than mine who died 1890. There is a William Trimble aged 50 who died in 1889 and I think that the Will is for him. Couldn't find one for Robert Trimble the Colonel and father of William Heywood. William Trimble who died in 1890 is my main interest but a Will for Robert (his brother) would be useful to work out who was the father of which children as I am looking for descendants of William as it is their line that married into my SHAW family and they may have info or photos to share. I have also since discovered that most of the TRIMBLE family immigrated to NZ and this explains why I have not been able to find anything of them in Ireland or Scotland. The other day I found the obit for my William TRIMBLE in Newspapers Past - Taranaki Herald, Volume XXXIX, Issue 8909, 17 October 1890, Page 3 OBITUARY. DEATH OF Mr. WILLIAM TRIMBLE. Mr William Trimble, brother to Colonel Trimble, now Judge of the Native Land Court, died at Auckland on Tuesday, at the age of seventy-one years, after a brief illness. The Auckland Herald says The deceased was born near Belfast, Ireland, and for several years was engaged as manager of large flax-spinning and linen weaving factories there a line of business in which he subsequently engaged on his own account. About fifteen years ago, during the excitement concerning Mr G Vesey Stewart's settlements at Katikati, Mr Trimble became infected with the fever for emigration, and came out to Katikati with his family. Not being one of the selectors fortunate enough to secure a piece of good land he did not remain there very long and came to Auckland where he was engaged in clerical work, by the late Ay Robert Graham and others. Some months ago Mr Trimble turned his attention to the methods used here for dressing flax and preparing tow, and his experience as a practical flax-spinner proving of value he discovered a process by which the value of tow could be considerably enhanced in the European market It is believed that Mr Trimble over-exerted himself in endeavouring to carry out operations to prove the value of his patent. He became ill, and was admitted to the hospital ten days ago. Though at first quite sensible on all points, he gradually sank and became unconscious, in which state he passed away yesterday. Deceased leaves a son and three daughters, who reside at the North Shore, and another daughter is living with her husband Mr Purvis, in England. Mr Trimble was for many years a Freemason of the Irish and Scotch constitutions, and held almost as high a rank as anyone in the colony. It is understood that the brethren in the city intend to accord him a Masonic funeral. By all who knew -him, both here and at home, Mr Trimble was greatly respected for his integrity and shrewdness. I have been finding out lots of information about Colonel Robert TRIMBLE and have been trying to sort out his children from William's. I wondered where I could look for a Will if there was one as it would make life easier. I have found some indexes are online but I do not know what area I should be looking in if Probate was granted.
