    1. [NZ-AUCKLAND] 1840's - District Chatham Barracks in Gillingham, Chatham, Kent England MURTAGH MAPEL
    2. Brenda MacCulloch
    3. Hi all, apologies for any cross-postings but I wondered if sks could direct me to where I could find information regarding the the soldiers records and any passenger lists or ships the soldiers travelled on 'down under' of the District Chatham Barracks in Gillingham, Chatham, Kent England, .. I have a person in the 1841 census, occupation 'Soldier' living there - Gerald MURTAGH b. abt 1826 in Ireland. 1849 he is married (in the same district) to Harriet MAPEL and then went to New Zealand. I did read somewhere the great excitement regarding the new ruling that allowed a ratio of 12 wives per 100 Soldiers (as opposed to the old 'six wives' per hundred soldiers) when being posted abroad and it was about 1849 so that may have been the reason for marrying. Neither Gerald or his wife are in the English 1851 census and one of their children Thomas Henry MURTAGH was born in 1857 in Wellington, New Zealand. On his son's marriage details in Auckland NZ 1883, Gerald's occupation is given as 'Painter'. Any help or direction gratefully received. Kind regards, Brenda Hamilton, New Zealand

    2. In a message dated 14/09/2007 07:42:58 GMT Daylight Time, ajmac@internet.co.nz writes: to where I could find information regarding the the soldiers records and any passenger lists or ships the soldiers travelled on 'down under' of the District Chatham Barracks in Gillingham, Chatham, Kent England, .. Hi Army records are held in the National Archives in Kew (suburbs of London, England) There is an index of soldiers discharged before 1854 in the online catalogue but I cannot find your Gerald on it. (his surname probably has a lot of variants) His 1849 marriage certificate should give you his own occupation and his father's name and occupation. If Gerald is still in the army at this point it might even give you his regiment. If he went out to NZ as a soldier then knowing his regiment might help to track down when and where he went. Tracing soldiers and mariners at the National Archives usually needs a personal visit or the employment of a professional researcher. Irene

    3. HBH 1892 Sept 1 4 Redfern, Alexander and Co REDFERN, ALEXANDER and Co's Suspension The person, whose death and withdrawal of capital is alleged to have caused the suspension of the well known London firm of REDFERN, ALEXANDER and C o, was Mr Philip VANDERBYL. He was the principal partner in the firm, and was also concerned in several colonial institutions which are also connected commercially with the firm in question. The late Mr VANDERBYL was formerly a London physician of great eminence, and the author of several medical books which are regarded as standard works on the subjects treated. He relinquished his profession to become a London merchant. He was very wealthy, and a very able man of business, and sat in Parliament for some years for a Somersetshire constituency. Messrs REDFERN, ALEXANDER and Co were the LONDON house of some important NEW ZEALAND firms, as well as agents for individuals, and a good deal of anxiety is felt here until a further information is received.

    3. HBH 1892 August 31 Earl of Glasgow Page 3 Home papers to hand by last mail have several notices of our new Governor, the Earl of Glasgow, from which we learn that he forms an interesting link with the days of Queen Anne. In his earlier years there was little prospect of his ever attaining the title. Born in 1833, his father was merely a very distant cousin of the then Earl-a young man who had sons of his own. One of these sons became fifth Earl, and dying childless was succeeded by his half brother, the sixth Earl, who had only two daughters, and so the heir to the title had to be sought for in the time represented by our governor. The ancestor from whom the present Earl derives his title was his great grandfather, the second Earl, who died in 1740. His younger son, the Hon. Patrick BOYLE, had a son David BOYLE, M.P. who son married Mary, daughter of Sir Robert ELPHINSTONE, and became in 1833 father of the present Earl, Governor of New Zealand.
