    3. HBH 1892 September 23 3 Woman Franchise WOMAN FRANCHISE A most absurd fiasco has occurred in the legislative Council in connection with woman franchise. After all the tremendous fire and fury which certain Councillors have fulminated over this question they actually allowed the obnoxious provision to pass twice over without noticing it or voting on it. The interpretation clause which enacts that "person" includes woman slipped through this evening without its scope being observed by the hostile Councillors, some of whom (notably Sir George WHITMORE) were away, but who came back rampant with indignation when they discovered what had happened, and threatened all sorts of reprisals, but then they found to their horror that they had actually enacted female franchise previously without being aware of the fact, by passing clause 6, which defines the qualifications of male or female voters, specifying every person having of "his or her" own right a freehold, &c,; "and every person who has resided for one year in the electoral district for which "he or she" claims to vote. A regular row ensued on this discovery, Sir George WHITMORE threatening to stonewall the bill line by line to vote on the question, and sir Patrick BUCKLEY implied that he would take similar action as to the electoral right amendment. In the end it was agreed to take the question as to woman franchise again tomorrow.

    1. [NZ-AUCKLAND] Matilda Furley nee Webb Story
    2. Elaine Mattsen
    3. My Webb/Furley Story Matilda, Mary and Elijah settled in New Zealand at various times between 1842 and 1855 and there are many descendants living in New Zealand. Matilda married Samuel Furley at Oldham, Lancashire in 1835. They had three daughters, Matilda (1850 married to William Henry Hayers, Sarah Ann (1852) married to Isaac Wilson-mariner from Orkney (my line) and Mary (1853) married to Farrell They each had children. Matilda Furley owned property in Onehunga and was very successful in business. (Ref Bio Matilda Webb/Furley NZ Archives) In addition she had shares in the Montezuma Gold Mine Company (Papers Past Daily Southern Cross 14 August 1869 Page 3 Advertisements Column 2 She died in Onehunga on 22nd Oct 1899. Somewhere, I have read that Matilda commenced work in her father's woollen mill in Dursley when she was aged about 12 In the 1841 Census Mary was also described as a Female Servant in the Westminster home of John Bridges, a tailor. I was unable to find her in the Middlesex section of the 1851 Census but she is said to have married a William Birch around 1850. Unfortunately, I was not able to find him in any Census They had two children, William Jacob (1851) and Matilda (1853) but unfortunately William (the father) died from Diabetes shortly after Matilda's birth, .Mary was left a widow with two small children to care for. This situation prompted Mary's elder sister Matilda to arrange for the family to come to New Zealand and they duly sailed from London on board the immigrant barque "Joseph Fletcher". They arrived at Auckland on 18th. Oct 1855. On 13th Jun 1857 Mary married Nelson Spaulding at Old St. Paul's, Onehunga. Who had arrived on the William-Ship: 596 tons-Captain: C McPhee-Surgeon Superintendent:Sailed San Francisco January 21st 1853 - arrived Auckland April 2nd 1853-Reference: The New Zealander/April 6th 1853 -NB I think there may a error on the William ship's list as he appears as SPALDEEN They had one child who died at the age of 6 years of Scarlet Fever. Nelson was involved in a boating accident on the Manukau Harbour in 15 August 1866 Ref Papers Past DSC 15 August 1866 Ferry "Mystery" Onehunga 10 Drowned. He was Ref Papers Past NELSON SPAULDING NATURALIZED-DSS 3 March 1863 P5 Mary died in Auckland on 30th Mar 1885, aged 65 years. One thing that I find somewhat strange is that Mary and her two children appear on the passenger list of the "Joseph Fletcher" as Webb's, not Birches. This story is continual so if anyone can add anything to it feel free to do so. Elaine Mattsen nee Wilson

    1. Re: [NZ-AUCKLAND] "Papers Past" & J.WOODHOUSE: agent
    2. Trish Jensen
    3. Ray , If you do find any information at all on this Woodhouse could you let the list know as I have a Woodhouse who came to Sydney from NZ and married my dad's cousin. trish in Sydney Once again Elaine, thank you for posting this link to Papers Past. If I had seen it previously, I had forgotten it. And of course I will repeat my thanks for your continual transcriptions posted on here for all of us. I do hope that you have obtained assistance from others in your recent postings for information on some of your own people. However, the main reason for this posting is this: I used Papers Past to search in old Auckland newspapers for family members (DAY) and found a shipping record in August 1851 for a Mrs DAY & 3 children on the "Emma"; which may very well be our family. (We had previously found an index card entry for this in the old Auckland library indexes, many many years ago). The newspaper report mentions at its conclusion: "J. WOODHOUSE, Agent". So I am assuming that to mean that he was the shipping agent who handled that ship. My question to the list is this please: Would anyone know if any business records might still exist, which had belonged to Mr WOODHOUSE, which might throw further light on these passengers? Yes, I know that this is a long-shot, but sometimes miracles do happen. LOL. Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help with this query. Best wishes to all: Ray in oz. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elaine Mattsen" <mattsen@paradise.net.nz> To: <nz-auckland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 22, 2007 5:13 AM Subject: [NZ-AUCKLAND] GOODSON's Arcade > Papers Past > http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NZ-AUCKLAND-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message -- No virus found in this incoming message.
