    2. Maureen Donwen
    3. Hi Margaret, Thanks for your response. On further searching I found several web sites which indicate that "hough" is a very old (as in biblical) word for cutting the hamstring, particularly in horses.http://www.dictionary.com/search?q=Hough . I wonder if the word cupled or cuple means to cripple. This certainly makes sense that somebody would cut the hamstrings of the cows in order to cripple them and thereby inhibit their "running around". I don't know how Mr. Gamble got on in his endeavor to find out who did this, but he seemed very upset as his notice offering this reward ran for several weeks in the newspaper. regards Maureen Margaret Lomas wrote: >Maureen >I think this must refer to harm done to the cows,eg. >'Houghed, houghing, houghs. 1. [NZ-AUCKLAND] Barton
    2. I am researching my family name, BARTON, who lived in Auckland, Westport, and who originated in Southport, Lancashire. My grand father was Thomas Barton, a cabinet maker who lived in Remuera, Auckland, and who was the father of Noel (ex mayor of Mt. Eden), John, Allan (my father), and Lillian. I am led to believe that Thomas Barton lived in Westport before moving to Auckland, but as for any information as to his parents, I have very few clues. If any reader of this list has any information which may be of help to me, I would appreciate your help. I can be contacted through this list, or you can e mail me at [email protected] Thank you, Allan JJ Barton.

    1. [NZ-AUCKLAND] My Auckland Ancestors
    2. Witches Brew
    3. Hi everyone, nice to have a list just for Auckland. My ancestors were one part Fencibles and the other English. Michael MCMULLEN - a Fencible Soldier arrived on the 'ANN' in May 1848 with four lovely daughters - Mary, married Henry MITCHELL (Fencible) - Margaret (gggg/m) married George STRONG (sailor on the "ANN') - Roseanne, married Angelo PARAGEE - he died in a fire and she married George SMITH - Ellen, married John COOK. All these people lived in the city or Otahuhu and later in Onehunga. I have all of the descendants of George and Margaret, most of Henry and Mary Roseanne and Angelo, but nothing on John and Ellen. He was a bootmaker in Onehunga, have not been able to trace any children, their deaths or where they vanished too. If any one in the Auckland area recognises any names I would love to hear from you. 1. [NZ-AUCKLAND] NZ Herald birth notices
    2. Thwaite
    3. Listers Can anyone help with this query ?? Do you know if Auckland Library holds fiche/film copies of NZ Heralds for 1981?? - I need a copy of a birth notice that would have appeared in early September 1981 (for a birth on 31/8) - we have a daughter who is reaching 21 this year, and we would very much like to have for her a photocopy of her birth notice - I don't seem to have kept the original (or else I have filed it away too carefully...!) OTHERWISE would I contact the Herald?? IF there are fiche/film copies in the Library, would SKS then be willing to obtain a photocopy/print of this for me - but only if you are a regular visitor to the Library, as I don't expect anyone to make a special trip or to pay the daily charge just for this one request - costs covered of course With thanks for any help or other suggestions Regards Stephen Thwaite in the Waikato
