I'm very interested in hearing about it. In her unpublished manuscript entitled "MacConnell Family Genealogy," my father's cousin, Margaret McConnell Snyder, late of Branchport, NY writes, "On April 14, 1860, Joseph Gillette McConnell married Barbara A. Kennedy, who came from the home village of Troquhain, Scotland at the age of about 8 and with her parents settled in this area." I'm not sure exactly what Margaret meant by this. Did she mean that Troquhain was the home of both families in Scotland? Or just that of the Kennedys? Do you have any information that would support this? I've been looking for the origin of our McConnell line for years. It appears that the information that Margaret got from her grandfather, Edward A. McConnell (1863-1939), is inaccurate and at times confusing, like many family stories that have been handed down over the years in oral form. In her introduction, Margaret mentions that the MacConnell line "starts back in Scotland in the 1600s near Edinburgh in the Scottish highlands in a small village called then Troquhain." Any map of Scotland shows that Edinburgh is far from the highlands and Troquhain is far from Edinburgh, if you can find Troquhain on a map. It no longer exists as a town or village. It's an area near New Galloway in the county now called Dumfries & Galloway that used to be Kirkcudbright (pronounced kee-cul-bree, or so I'm told. Go figure). I wouldn't be surprised if neither Margaret nor my great-grandfather has access to a map of Scotland that showed it; I had to purchase of copy of one from 1885 in order to find it. I'd be happy to send you a copy of this map, if you'd like one. Thanks for anything you can add to this.
