Looking at the database, WELLS or WELLES individuals which have some connection back to Yates Co., NY (born prior to 1820) are: Note: the Wells DNA Family (if known) is listed between parenthesis. Wells, Peter 1756 Wells, William c 1770 (W019) Wells, John 1786 Welles, Joseph 1788 Wells, David Burroughs 6 May 1790 (W015) Wells, Henry (Supreme Ct Judge) 17 Oct 1794 (W001) Wells, Walter 1797 Wells, George M 2 Mar 1799 (W015) Wells, Milton S c 1800 Wells, Reuben 1807 (W019) Wells, Emeline c 1810 Welles, Valorus 1813 Wells, Lewis E 1813 Wells, George D 1818 Wells, Willard 1818 Wells, Joseph 1818 Wells, Isaac Rowland 6 Nov 1818 (W015) Wells, George Washington 1819 (W015) Welles, Samuel Haight 25 Nov 1819 (W001) -- stopped listing for those after 1819 You will notice that there are at least 3 DNA Families noted ... W001, W015 (mine) and W019 .. the rest are unknown DNA families as no one has tested from the line and they have not been connected to any existing DNA families. Since the study is based on the 46-marker Y-chromosome results only 'living Wells males' can provide the DNA sample. The Y-chromosome is passed 'almost unaltered' from father to son, therefore it follows the biological paternal surname... unless adopted or name change.
