The Conklins and the Pulvers were intertwined families. I have both Conklins and Pulvers in my husband's direct ancestry. My Pulvers came from Columbia County, through Otsego County to Yates county, which seems consistent w/ the locations of your family noted in the 1855 census. I have an Elizabeth Pulver, b. 8 Oct 1807 in Claverack, Columbia County (a ggg grandaunt of my husband) who married John Conklin b. abt 1784, d. 27 Jun 1873, they had at least three children David, Mariah and Lucendia. This David seems consistent w/ the David you have. [Note that Elizabeth's mother was also a Conklin, (Lovina Conklin), who dies in Yates Co.] Now I can't place John Conklin, spouse of Elizabeth, within the greater Conklin family, but I do know that my Conklins (ancestors of Lovina) have a well-documented link to the Montauk Indians of Long Island. It is through the Conklins that my husband is a member of the Montauk nation. So maybe it is this American Indian heritage that became part of your family lore. I can go back to my references and see if they have any additional info on John Conklin, father of David. If you believe these are the right folks, I have the Pulvers all the way back to immigration to the New World as part of the Palatine migration in the Hudson Valley. There are several generations of Conklins w/ very large families (10 children) so that may make it a challenge to determine exactly where your Conklin links in.
