I came across the following today in the Western Star, a Penn Yan, NY newspaper dated Tuesday, Oct. 16, 1832 on page 3: Married - In Starkey, on the 13th inst. by Rev. Mr. Adgate, Mr. Warren ( )ills, to Miss Lavina Barse, both of this village. [The Printers were remembered.] () This was on the edge of the page and was illegible. I once discovered that there used to be a French villa named Barse. Because George came over in 1792, I fantasized that we were once French aristocracy and fled the country during the revolution and reached the US via Holland. Of course, nothing backs up my imagination and no reparations have appeared from the French government, so my outlandish story remains fiction. I have always been told that Barse comes from the Dutch word for Perch (as in the fish, not the verb). So, I can only assume my family in the old country were fishermen. I did come across Barses throughout history in odd locations. I found one in 15th or 16th Scandanavia. I also found a de la Barse in Mexico. There is a Barse jewelry company based out of Dallas. They named themselves after the artist. They have ignored my e-mails thus far. "Barse" is also unflattering slang in the UK. Sincerely, G. R. Your family seems to be pretty well researched, post US-arrival. Have you been able to document yet where in Holland they came from? What I cannot find is why my Barse family believed that our two families were related! I have since my original email traced my Barses back to *Germany* not Holland, and have discovered that the name was originally spelled Barsh, Beersh, Bertsch, Buers, etc. Our emigrant ancestor was Ludwig Buers (Pares, Bertsch, etc.)who came to NY in 1710 and was a Palatine refugee. The family tradition was that our Barses were Dutch, and on our written family tree was listed what is probably a great-great...grandfather of yours, George Randolph Barse, Sr. Once I started doing my own research, I realized that there was *no* way that he could have been my 2x greatgrandfather, never having had a son named John Frederick Barse! Now William B. Barse is in that spot on the tree. My greatgrandmother, Susan Belle Barse (m. Warren Hastings Miller)was an artist, as was their son Barse Miller. The family apparently joked that there were only two successful artists in the family, George Randolph Barse, Jr. and Barse Miller. Do you have any tradition in your family of Barse Miller being related? I find it quite a puzzle! I kept thinking that the original 1792 emigrant's brother/son Charles might have been our emigrant, but once I discovered that our Barse spelling only came about in the early 1800s and traced it back through the variants, well, I'm not sure it's a mystery that will be solved. :) Lorraine Allrelated Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My father died in 1991 in Tacoma, Wa. His name was Francis Henry Murdock. It is my understanding that he lived in Penn. and New Jersey. To the best of my knowledge his mother's name was Florence DeCento, Florence Lamoreaux, and Florence Murdock. There may have been one more name that I don't know. I was never sure about the truthfulness of what my father told my mother and I, so I do not know for sure. Was Florence married multiple times, having three husbands and children with each? Did she ever have a son named Frank or Francis? I know you wanted help here, but I'm the one who needs it now. Thank you!
