    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: kdefoster Surnames: McConnell, Scott Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.yates/1848/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Our written family history contains very little about the second wife of my gg-grandfather, Ira A. McConnell. Both the Scotts and the McConnells lived in Steuben and Yates counties so I'm posting my message to both. What has been recorded about Virginia is vague and not at all flattering. On Christmas Day, 1884, Ira McConnell took his own life, a shocking occurence at any time or place, but he chose to do it on a holiday at his residence when his wife and two sons were home. The oldest son, my great-grandfather, Edward A. McConnell, had left years before, claiming cruel treatment from his stepmother. A recent find from the Yates County Chronicle provides more information concerning this mystery. 29 January 1886: "Mrs. Virginia McConnell, of Italy, publishes in the Prattsburgh News a card denying many accusations that she says have been made against her. Among them was the statement that she tortured her late husband into giving her a deed of his farm." Does anyone know anything about this? Her side of the story, perhaps? Any information would be appreciated. Kathy McConnell Hudson Kailua, Hawaii Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. Re: [NYYATES] Newlands
    2. I found a Lucinda Newland, daughter of Calvin and Sarah Newland. This is in the Milo, Yates Co. 1850 census. She was born about 1835... Then there is another Lucinda Newland, b. abt 1833 in the 1850 census for Milo..Lucinda Newlin (Newland)17, was living in the household of William M. and Harriet Oliver, ages 54 and 40, who had a worth of 2000. (Acres?) He was a bank cashier who was born in NH. The household had four children, Andrew Oliver, age 34 (a laborer), I wonder if this Josiah Newland was the son of my Wright Brown? Wright was married first to Hannah Newland and he too, lived in Milo. In a message dated 8/30/2008 8:06:19 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, thatawayqh@aol.com writes: Hi, Looking for Lucy Newland parents. Author: ResearchBug Surnames: Honey, Fitzsimmons, Harpending, Winfield Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.yates/1847/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to identify the parents of my gggGrandfather, Calvin Henry Honey, b. 1815 or 1816, possibly in or near Yates Co.NY. On census records he states he was born in NY, but Army records say NH. He was married 7 Dec 1843 in Lowell, MA. I have read of a Calvin Honey who started a store in Yates, Honey & Fitzsimmons I think, but it failed. It was built by Harpending, I believe. I'm wondering if this storekeeper Calvin Honey, who married Amanda Winfield there, could be my Calvin Honey's father. I have really hit a brick wall with this since there are several Honey Families in New England from 1700's on, and I cannot seem to connect my Calvin Honey with the right parents. If anyone has historical information to share, or more information on the Calvin Honey of Yates, it would be greatly appreciated. My Calvin Honey came West to California about 1854. Thank You. 3. Yates county wasn't formed until 1823. Prior to that, it was part of Ontario Co., NY. Perhaps you will want to contact www.raims.com who holds the archives and records for Ontario Co, and they can better guide you in your search. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <NYYATES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2008 3:03 PM Subject: [NYYATES] Lookup Please, Calvin Honey, Yates, early 1800's > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: ResearchBug > Surnames: Honey, Fitzsimmons, Harpending, Winfield > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.yates/1847/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I am trying to identify the parents of my gggGrandfather, Calvin Henry > Honey, b. 1815 or 1816, possibly in or near Yates Co.NY. These collections of first-hand accounts are archived in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress for use by researchers and to serve as an inspiration for generations to come. > > The program is designed to preserve the legacies of America's aging veterans who are dying at the rate of about 1,500 a day. > > "Getting these oral histories now is important, because once they are gone, their stories are gone forever," said Steve Hollingshead from the Department of Veterans Affairs' Media Services Division. > > The project collects remembrances of veterans who served in World War I, World War II, the Cold War, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War (1990-1995), or Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts (2001-present). Citizen civilians who actively supported war efforts (such as war industry workers, USO workers, flight instructors, medical volunteers, defense contractors, etc.) are also invited to share their valuable stories. > > Interviews taped through the program go on file at the Library of Congress, where they are available for researchers, and the veteran gets a personal DVD copy, Mr. Hollingshead explained. > > But while the program initially focused on older veterans, Mr. Hollingshead said, he is increasingly seeing veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan participating in the project. > > The younger veterans' stories are different from those of earlier generations, Mr. Hollingshead said. They served in different wars, carrying out different missions and applying different kinds of warfare. Their wounds are different today, with traumatic brain injuries and amputations more prevalent than in the past. > > But despite these differences, Mr. Hollingshead said, he sees a common thread among the veterans he interviews. Whether they served in World War I or Operation Iraqi Freedom, or in some conflict in between, all recognize that "they were there, fighting for their country," he said. > > "All of them love their country and are here for all the right reasons," Mr. Hollingshead said. "The patriotism you see in these people is just phenomenal." > > All Americans, including students and grandchildren, can participate in documenting the lives of the nation's war veterans, Mr. Hollingshead said. > > The history project relies on volunteers throughout the nation to collect veterans' stories on behalf of the Library of Congress. These stories are made available to researchers and the general public, both at the library in Washington and via the VHP Web site at http://www.loc.gov/vets/vets-home.html. > > The U.S. Congress created the Veterans History Project in 2000. The authorizing legislation (Public Law 106-380), sponsored by Representatives Ron Kind, Amo Houghton and Steny Hoyer in the U.S. House of Representatives, and Senators Max Cleland and Chuck Hagel in the U.S. Senate, received unanimous support and was signed into law by President Clinton in October 2000. ADAMS, b. abt 1807 in VT or NY; raised in Western NY, probably Ontario or Yates County. He is mentioned in Cleveland's 1873"History of Yates County" as a son of Asahel ADAMS and Polly LOWELL, and married to Esther LEE. He may have lived in Huron or Erie County, OH. He lived in St. Louis, MO; Delaware County, IA; Madison County, IL. Last documentation I've found for him is in the 1860 census in St. Louis. He possibly died aft 1860 in St. Louis. Looking for any info on his wives and children. I have a lot of info and speculation which I'd be happy share. John S. 1. [NYYATES] DEMISE OF NY GEN & BIO SOCIETY
    2. Dick, thank you for letting us know. I am thoroughly disgusted. I was not a member of the society but I have New York ancestry, both in NYC 1624 and Western NY before 1800. It's too bad the wrong kind of people got involved with the management of that society. I'm sure they were the ones who caused it to fail. And did it actually fail? It's too bad the Attorney General of the State of New York cannot investigate this.
