Jeremiah & Sally Beebe may have been his parents who died in the Cuba, New York (Allegany Co.) area. I believe that there is a wife of Valorous, Emily Thomas Beebe, who died in Bradford, New York on 2 May 1874. I believe that her parents once lived in Yates County. She was born on 27 Sep 1810. The only information I have for Valorous is a birth date of about 1809, born to Jeremiah & Sally Beebe. Thank you for any help you can offer! Houghtalings were of the early settlers of Dundee and Eddytown (now known as Lakemont). I have traced back Houghtaling as far back as 1644 coming from Holland and spelled at that time Hooghteling, so don't get hung up on the spelling. I know I have many spaces to fill in and have yet to visit the Milo church cemetery - but I am more directly related to the Nellie Houghtaling who married James B Campbell. they lived in branchport, Yates county, NY. It is my understanding that they had four children (Leslie, b. 1922, is the oldest). I believe Eddie was mentally ill and sent to a hospital. Lela remarried to John Groom, who adopted their youngest son, Ervie (my husband's grandfather), and had three additional children. The family still lives in the area near Schuyler County in NY (just visited them this past month). I believe Eddie and Lela were married in Montour in 1918. Eddie worked on railroad bed construction. Eddie was born in Beaver Dams in 1886 to Evlyn and Ulissa Ann (Wight) Spielman, who were berry farmers near Watkins. Let me know what other information you are looking for and I can try to help. She died in Bath, NY in 1858. I am posting this to the Yates Board because I know that there were Lewises in Yates County at an early date. I've been in touch with some respondents who have Lewis ancestors, possibly from Sussex County, NJ., which county adjoins Orange County, NY, though nothing conclusive was established as far as a connection. Elizabeth Lewis (born c. 1770, Orange County) had a strain of Native American blood---anywhere from half (doubtful); 1/4 to 1/8 being more likely. Acc. to Steuben County histories she married Andrew Smith in 1793 , born Scotland (1761-1837) who was in the company of men with Col.Charles Williamson who founded Bath, NY in 1793. He was known as "Muckle" Andrew Smith; "muckle" being Scots dialect for big and strong. Williamson was agent for the Pulteney Estate in England which owned vast tracts of land in the Finger Lakes region and to the west of them. One note from a researcher said they were married at Old North Church in 1795. I have searched the on-line records for the Old North Church in Sussex County, NJ and also a church with the same name in Bergen County, NJ, both counties border Orange County. Both searches reveal no record for Eliz. and Andrew's marriage. Maybe the on-line information for those two churches is incomplete; maybe the assertion of being married in a church by that name is incorrect. Or maybe there is another Old North Church, perhaps in the Finger Lakes region? Elizabeth Lewis Smith and Andrew Smith lived their married lives in Bath. If the names of their children give any clues as to the Lewis side, their children were: (1). Charles A. Smith, b. 1796, married Azilla Morgan. (2). Maria Smith, b. 1799, married Dominick Quin (3). John Johnson Smith, b. 1802, married Jane Rutherford (4). Andrew Smith, Jr. b. 1806, married Maria Doyle (5). Nancy H. Smith, born 1809, married Andrew Smith (same name as her father! Maybe a cousin. (6). Elizabeth Smith, b. 1811, married James Rutherford. (My direct ancestors who migrated to Stillwater, Minnesota in 1850.) I have been trying to discover the origins of Elizabeth ("Betsy") Lewis Smith for over 40 years, and that is too long. You can't see me, but I am down on my knees, asking for help of any kind as to the origins--parents, and ancestry of this most elusive ancestor. There is so much detailed information about Andrew in the Steuben County histories, but other than the fact that he married E.L.S. in 1795, they are essentially silent re. info on Elizabeth. Help of any kind will be deeply appreciated: information, surmises, suggesions, referrals, etc. Thanks very much in advance.
