I am tracing lineage of a Lydia Martin, whose parents were Albert Martin and Rachel Shelman. A question has been raised by scanning the 1850 NY Census, Java, Wyoming Co., NY It shows an ALBERT MARTIN, AGE 27 with no wife mentioned but a daughter Lydia M, age 3 (this would be my gggrandmother, Charles A 2 and Rosana 2 mo. The time cycle is right but a surname appearing before his in the census gives a JACOB SHELMAN, age 57 and Lydia age 43 as having 4 children, Rachel 27, Pliney 19, Peter 16, and George 10. I am wondering about Rachel 27 ---- she is a like age with Albert. But it is a mystery. Was she visiting next door when census taker arrived or????? Anyone have any information about these two families. I have pictures of Pliney, Charles A and Rosanna in later life. Thank you for reading this and I have my fingers crossed., Kay Karry
