Among the 43 high school students from Western New York selected to perform during the summer with the Spirit of Youth were Carrie BEYER of Holland, Jamie DeMORE and Timothy WELCH of Delevan and Faith FINCH of Arcade. Deaths: Lyle POTTER, 94, of Machias; Helen ORR, 91, formerly of Sardinia; Wayne SLOTMAN, 53, of Machias. 25 Years Ago - August 2, 1978 Deaths: Donald HEITZHAUS, 18, of Java Center; Kenyon GRETZLER of Arcade, formerly of Delevan; Arthur NEAMON of Arcade; George WEICHMANN Jr., 4, of Bliss; Arthur DARUSZKA of Arcade. 35 Years Ago - August 1, 1968 An open house was held at the new five-building, 20-unit Arcade Apartments on West Main Street. The owners were Joseph GIALLANZA of Elma and Jerome RAYNOR of Lancaster. Jane McARTHUR was elected president of the Holland school board. Deaths: Lucille NICHOLS HAGGERTY, 69, of Curriers; William MINGLE, 67, of Java Center; Rockwell WOODARD, 63, formerly of Arcade; Laura TAYLOR EMERSON, formerly of Delevan. 50 Years Ago - July 30, 1953 Voters in the Delevan-Machias district defeated a school building program for the fourth time. Jack MARSH, president of the school board, said there were no plans to submit more proposals. The Eagle Hose Company in Bliss was hosting the annual convention of the Wyoming County Volunteer Firemen's Association. Charles LITTLE and Paul SHAFFNER were the local chairmen.
