VALENTE, who practiced medicine in Strykersville from 1939 to 1990, died at the age of 84. Marty & Margaret BENZINGER of Arcade were operating The Olde Schoolhouse Christmas Tree Farm on Route 39 near Bliss. Alton "Pete" PETTIT of Arcade was appointed a national deputy chief of staff for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Friends of the Arcade Free Library held its first Festival of Trees. Marjorie RYAN came up with the idea for the festival. Elected matron of local Eastern Star chapters were Dorothy COLLER at Machias and Margaret JONES at Java Village. Roger Bishoff was elected master of the Masonic Lodge in Machias. Mary DIESFELD of Arcade won the Outstanding Teenage Young Man and Woman contest sponsored by the Pioneer Jaycees and Jayncees. Richard RUTECKI had been elevated to monsignor. Ralph CHRISTMANN of Delevan Machias was named Coach of the Year by the Seneca Football Conference. The SCHWAB Block at 1 North Main Street in Holland had been extensively remodeled and renovated for use by several office tenants. Mrs. Walter LIS was elected matron of the Eastern Star chapter in Machias. Frederick SCHWAB was elected master of the Masonic ledge in Machias. William BLAKE of Freedom died at age 77. 50 Years Ago - December 18 & 25, 1952 Vernon BARBER of the Bliss Grange was installed as master of the Wyoming County Pomona Grange. Duval KING was elected president of the Arcade Conservation Society.
