Hi Hal, You can get by without a date if the name isn't overly common, at least out here in the counties in the "sticks"....you probably might not get away with it in Erie or Monroe though!! AND, to make matters a little worse, it's not uncommon for an immigrant to have filled out their papers for their Intent in one state, but then Naturalize in another state! As far as WHERE to find the records, I know that in Genesee County, they told me that the Naturalization records had been moved from the County Clerk's to the Historians....SO, I went to the Historian's, where I was told that the very OLD ones, which was what I was looking for, were still at the Clerk's, because they were originally filed in the Miscellaneous books, and not in their own books. SO, I went BACK to the Clerk's, where they INSISTED that ALL the Naturalization records had been moved! I did finally get one of the girls from the Historian's Office to CALL the County Clerk's Office and explain the situation, so that when I got back there, I actually found the record I wanted!! Livingston County is also supposed to have moved their records to the Historian's, and I do know that at least SOME of them are there, because I found another one that I needed there. It's not that big of a deal for the Historian's to check the books for you, even if you don't have an exact date!! OR I should say....it SHOULDN'T be a big deal!!! GOOD LUCK!!
