Among those selected to attend American Legion Boys' State were Tod MOORE and Hans SPRINGER of Holland and Kyle SMITH of Java Village. Lisa KALENICK was chosen to attend Girls' State. Matthew MEDDEN won the Steve and Mavis SMITH Outstanding Senior Award at Pioneer. The Odosagih Bible Conference in Machias began its 70th season. Robert KREPPS was elected commander of the American Legion post in Machias. Deaths: Glenn SMITH, 71, of Chaffee; Ruth WEBER KESTER, of Arcade; George MILLER, 73, formerly of North Java. 25 Years Ago - July 5, 1978 The barn on the Harold MAPES farm near Machias was destroyed by fire. 35 Years Ago - July 2, 1968 New teachers at Pioneer included kindergarten teacher Orvilla ROGERS of Delevan and math teacher Gary BRUCE of West Valley. Mr. & Mrs. Sam JOHNSTON, formerly of Arcade, observed their 60th anniversary. Deaths: Alma CHASE REMINGTON, 86 of Arcade; Emma WAGNER NEAMON, 79, formerly of Yorkshire; Leonard FULLER, 74, formerly of Arcade; Laura WHEELOCK STOLL, 83, of Machias. More deaths: Perry (Pat) DENNIS of Arcade; Florence BIGELOW WEIDMAN, 55, of North Java; Ella REDDEN BERWANGER, 79, of Arcade; Jean LEWIS HARTER, 47, formerly of East Holland. 50 Years Ago - July 2, 1953 Charles SHAW retired after 35 years as a rural mail carrier out of the Chaffee post office.
