During the same week, the A & A named its steam engine in honor of longtime engineer Manley HAKES. Harold and Evelyn MOSCONE PHAIR of Delevan celebrated their golden anniversary in May. Java Center native Joan HACKETT EFFMAN was named executive director of the Arts Council for Wyoming County. Deaths: Florence DREW BELL, 80, of Bliss; Paul HANES, 32, formerly of Freedom; Carl McCORMICK, 81, formerly of Java Center. 25 Years Ago - June 28, 1978 Mary SIMONS, principal at the Delevan Elementary School since 1973, resigned per position to return to classroom teaching. Norris and Vivian PHILLIPPI, formerly of Freedom, observed their golden anniversary. Deaths: Thomas CUNNIFFE of Arcade; Charles LITZINGER of Arcade. 35 Years Ago - June 27, 1968 The Rev. Donald SCHOEWE of Wisconsin was installed as pastor of Hope Lutheran Church in Arcade. A house fire near Machias left the Duane TINGUE family homeless. Richard McADOO was elected president of the Pioneer Faculty Association. The school's new contract with the PFA called for beginning teachers to receive $6,400 in 1968-69. Deaths: Joseph KIC, 23, of Delevan; Ruth SCRIBNER HOOK, 85, formerly of Delevan; William SMALL, 59, of Arcade; Frances BLEVINS, 98, Sheldon. 50 Years Ago - June 25, 1953 Gail HAKES was general chairman of the Chaffee-Sardinia Fire Company's fifth annual team pull and carnival. Local commencement ceremonies featured 63 graduates at Arcade and 29 at Holland. The Delevan merchants were sponsoring outdoor concerts by the summer band, conducted by Art DEDRICK. Arcade Builders Inc., with C. B. HURLBURT as president, was building home in "Glenwood Acres," the former HASKELL property off Liberty Street in Arcade. This in now Glenwood Drive. Deaths: Msgr. John J.
