The Holland plant had been closed since November 1990, when Fisher-Price closed its doors, leaving about 475 people without a job. The LEWIS family and former Governor and Mrs. Jimmie Davis of Louisiana were the featured performers at Earl's Drive-In on Route 16. Deaths: Sadie OWENS PARKER, 67, of Machias; Anna SCHUNKE TESCH, 67, of Chaffee; Henry CASSICK, 74, of Delevan; Mary HUMMEL SCHWAB, 67, of Bliss. 25 Years Ago - July 12, 1978 Delia SHADBOLT, Lillian PHILLIPS, and Anna WALTER retired from Pioneer's teaching staff. L.J. and Elizabeth DAGGETT WILLIAMS of Machias observed their golden anniversary. Willy LIMBURG was director of the Java-Strykersville Kiwanis Club's third annual Soap Box Derby. Deaths: Doreen GINGHER FENNER, formerly of Delevan; Wilfred WOLCOTT, 57, formerly of Arcade; Christina MIZERAK BAIRD, 92, of Freedom; Elizabeth LEONARD HENRY of Strykersville. 35 Years Ago - July 11, 1968 Harvey ROLL of Sandusky and James BLIZZARD of Java Center were elected to the Pioneer school board. The fifth-grade classes at Pioneer's Arcade building were to be housed in the Arcade United Methodist Church classrooms until completion of the junior-senior high school in Yorkshire. Deaths: Harriett PIERCE EDMUNDS, 88, of Delevan; Peter SCHILTZ of Strykersville; Harry MARCH, 75, formerly of Delevan; Jennie HOGAN GEORGE, 91, of Arcade; Jesse TUNIS LOWE, 81, formerly of Delevan; Leona BABCOCK WOOLLEY, 83, of North Java; Freedom native Harold CRADLER. 50 Years Ago - July 9, 1953 The Rev. John TRULIN was appointed paster of St. Nicholas Church in North Java.
