People had been obtaining water from the landmark spring since about 1817. Deaths: Angela BARTZ CLINCH, 72, of Arcade; John LENNOX, 81, of Yorkshire; William SCHWEDT, 66, of Delevan; Ann LONG COLLINS, 88, of Java Center; Florence PLUGH BIGELOW WELLS, 89, formerly of Arcade. 25 Years Ago - August 31, 1978 Warehouse Paints opened a store in Arcade. Steve and Laurie ZALEWSKI were the managers. Deaths: Frances PICKENS KUHN, 65, of Machias; Walter BYROADS, 75, formerly of Sandusky. 35 Years Ago - August 29, 1968 Richard EDMUNDS of Freedom, a senior at Cornell, was in California to compete in the crew trails for the upcoming Olympics. Ellen DEDRICK of Delevan, a June high school graduate, joined her older sister and brothers as a singing instrumentalist in the Free Design recording group. Ellen made her debut on the Arthur Godfrey radio show. Mr. & Mrs. Fred GIBBON of Arcade observed their golden anniversary. Rex CLOUSTON of Warsaw joined the social studies staff at Pioneer's Arcade building.
