A time capsule, to be opened in 2043, was buried next to the gazebo by Tony ANNUNZIATO, co-chair of the centennial committee, and Dave STEINER, who was honored for his work on the gazebo project. Many Java residents attended a dinner at the North Java Fire Hall, in honor of Alex DOMINICK and Edward FREYBURGER, for their combined 48 years as town justices. Members and friends of the Java Village Congregational Church held a celebration in honor of the church's 175th anniversary. among those present was Ardys MILLER, who joined the church in 1918. Deaths: Carrie BEACH FRANKLIN, 76, of Machias; James ANDERSON, 88, of Arcade; Thomas STANDISH, 48, of Strykersville; Roger SMITH, 51, of Delevan; Jeanne ROCHE PLEACE, 57, of Java Center. 25 Years Ago - October 26, 1978 Frank DiPAOLO was elected president of the Delevan-Yorkshire merchants' group. Laurence RUPERT was the first recipient of a laity award established in his name by the Sardinia United Methodist Church. Cyril KNIGHT of Arcade was named a member of the College Council of the State University College at Fredonia. Lloyd SIMONS, a Sardinia native who became director of the Extension Service in New York State, died. Other deaths: Frank WIEDEMANN, 82, of Chaffee; Cynthia BROWNING FLOYD, 24, of Yorkshire. 35 Years Ago - October 24, 1968 The Village of Delevan completed its conversion from incandescent to mercury vapor street lighting. Dick EDMUNDS of Freedom and his partner came in fifth in crew competition at the Olympics in Mexico City. An appreciation dinner in his honor was held at the school in Delevan. Golden anniversaries were observed by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas HESS of Bliss and Mr. and Mrs. Chester LIMBURG of Chaffee. Deaths: Alan HOWARD, 17, of Machias; Clara TILTON TULLAR of Sandusky; William CAGWIN, 55, of Delevan. 50 Years Ago - October 22, 1953 A postal inspector recommended elimination of the rural delivery route out of Chaffee and the division of that route between the Holland and Arcade post offices. Clair GOODMAN was elected president of the Holland Kiwanis Club.
