Yansick Lumber Company on West Main Street in Arcade. Susan McVITTIE and Marie PERINI were directing the musical "Oklahoma!" at Holland High School. Pioneer's Ben HECKATHORN won the Section VI wrestling title at 155 pounds. A bomb in an underground garage caused damage to the World Trade Center. Arcade native Philip RIX, who was at work on the 37th floor of Tower 1 at the time, told the Herald, "It sounded like a plane had crashed into the building." (RIX still worked at the WTC in 2001, but had not yet gone to his office at the time of the September 11 attacks.) Deaths: Thomas HARRINGTON, 53, of Freedom; Anna STEIN FREES, 91, of Machias; Arthur COTTRELL, 86, of Arcade; James DOWNING, 36, formerly of Arcade. 25 Years Ago - March 8, 1978 Eugene PINKOWSKI was installed as commander of the new All-Star VFW Post of Chaffee-Sardinia. Fire damaged the Donald MAPES residence south of Machias. The house was one of the oldest in the community. Patty DENNIS won the Buffalo Evening News Spelling Bee at Pioneer Middle School. Bonnie JEDRZEIEK was runner-up. Deaths: Frank SMITH, 75, of Strykersville; Charlotte PEMPSELL WAGNER, 77, of Chaffee; Charles CLARK, 61, formerly of Arcade. 35 Years Ago - March 7, 1968 William SCOTT was installed as president of the Delevan-Machias Kiwanis Club. Deaths: Herman SMITH, 69, of Bliss; Kathryn WILLIAMS BOOKMILLER, 80, of Arcade; Laura TILTON KING, 54, of Yorkshire; Louise MERGES, 73, formerly of North Java; Mary SLATTERY SCHANG, 68, of Yorkshire; John KING, 82, formerly of Arcade; William BARTZ, 21, of Holland. 50 Years Ago - March 5, 1953 Drs. N. M. PADDOCK and C. W. EASTON formed a partnership to practice veterinary medicine in Machias. The Delevan-Machias basketball team won the Cattaraugus County Class C title by defeating Limestone. High scorers were Max BROWN, Mike WIESE and Dick SCHAPER. Hayden ROSIER was elected president of the Arcade Chamber of Commerce.
