Deaths: Mary Helen MOORE MATTIA, 73, of North Java; Ruth KIRSCH, 68, of Holland; Ollah BAGNEY HURLBURT, 93, formerly of Arcade. 25 Years Ago - March 15, 1978 Groundbreaking ceremonies were held in Arcade for a new apartment complex for the retired and elderly. The complex, located off North Street, was owned by Jack DAUGHERTY. Connie MILLER, Reuhl DABOLT, and Anita ROLL had the lead roles in "The Sound of Music" at Pioneer High School. Bob SHERET opened the Twin Pines Sport Shop on Route 16, south of Delevan. Howard KRIST retired from the Krist Furniture Store in Delevan. Richard WILTSE became manager of the store. Make ARNOLD of Delevan, a wrestler at Ashland College, won All-American honors at the Division III Nationals. Lee FRIEND and Dan MASON of Pioneer wrestled in the state wrestling meet in Syracuse. Francis HARRISON retired from the Village of Arcade's water department. Hubert HOPKINS of Sardinia died at age 69. 35 Years Ago - March 14, 1968 Over 100 people attended a testimonial dinner for Sardinia's Arthur CARLSEN, who had become the first chairman of the new Erie County Legislature. Helen WELLES won the spelling bee at the Arcade school. Lory LEONARD opened the Southwood Beauty Shop on Curriers Road, near Arcade.
