The Town of Willink was divided into the three towns in 1818, and Colden was split off from Holland nine years later. Fire destroyed the Don NEAMON home south of Delevan. Father Edward E. MUERDER was named to succeed Msgr. Patrick WOODS as pastor of St. Patrick's Church in Java Center. Father MUERDER was also pastor of St. Nicholas parish in North Java and St. Joseph parish in Bliss. The Holland Fire Department elected Rick WOHLGEMUTH chief, Scott PANGEL first aid captain, and Howard GARDNER president. Schambach Maple on Route 39 in Sardinia held a grand opening sale. The Arcade Village Board lowered the speed limit on village-owned streets to 25 mph. Ruth SUHR AGTHE of Holland died at age 88. 25 Years Ago - February 15, 1978 Diane WOOD was elected president of the Arcade Free Library. The library board voted to build an addition to the existing building, rather than build a new one. Architect Trevor ROGERS had drawn up plans for an addition. Edwin MERRIMAN of Chaffee was appointed to the Erie County Soil Conservation District. Mark LILLENSTEIN was appointed police justice in Delevan. Tom REITZ became editor and Dale FRYER became managing editor of the Tri-County Times. Jean MINERD opened The Spirits Shop at 282 Main Street in Arcade. Citizens Central Bank named Steven BESSE vice president and senior loan officer. George CRAWFORD of Delevan was re-elected president of the Cooperative Extension Association of Cattaraugus County. Mary SWANSON of Farmersville died at age 87. 35 Years Ago - February 15, 1968 This area was not spared the heavy losses suffered by American forces during the Tet offensive in Vietnam. Warrant Officer Dwight "Pete" DEDRICK, 22, of Delevan, was killed on January 31, when his helicopter was shot down near Hue. Spec. 4 Robert FORKL, 20, formerly of Holland and a graduate of Holland Central, was fatally injured by mortar fire near Kontum on January 30. Theodore BUCKNAM Jr. of Holland was recovering in a military hospital from serious injuries suffered in action on January 30. Eugene SNYDER was named branch manager of the Arcade district of Iroquois Gas. Editor Jim McGURK represented the Herald at the 116th annual meeting of the New York Press Association. Senators Robert Kennedy and Jacob Javits were the featured speakers. James WOODRUFF of Machias was elected president of the Cattaraugus County Coon Club, and Paul HAMBIN was elected president of the Lime Lake Sportsmen's Club. Graig NORTHEY and Barbara PALMER were crowned king and queen at Holland Central's mid-winter dance. Anna SCHLOTHON GUENTHER of Delevan died at age 76. 50 Years Ago - February 12, 1953 John GRETCHELL was installed as noble grand of the Odd Fellows lodge in Delevan.
