David WELLS of the Arcade Police Department, in the parking lot of a convenience store. Channel 7 meteorologist Mike RANDALL was scheduled to judge the downtown chile cook-off during the Arcade Winterfest. Ground was broken for Arcade Manor, an apartment complex for senior citizens, at the corner of Route 39 and Sherman Drive. Sears announced its plans to close all of its independent catalog stores, including the one on West Main Street in Arcade. Brenda SCHMIDT had operated the store for 16 years. The Buffalo Bills lost their third straight Super Bowl. Deaths: Merle ROGERS, 63, of Machias; Georgia ASHCRAFT DAGGETT, 97, of Delevan; Karen ANDERSON, 64, of Machias; Carl MEYER, 72, of Arcade; Minnie Rose DENNIS, 84, of Arcade; Clinton DOSTER Sr., 67, formerly of Sheldon; Dr. Gordon STOCKIN, 77, formerly of Chaffee. 25 Years Ago - February 8, 1978 Fire destroyed a barn at the Preston RICE residence near Sardinia. Dorothy TITUS of Delevan was named postmaster at Sardinia. Nicholas BOCHARSKI of Machias graduated from the State Police Academy. Deaths: Linnie McCUTCHEON NICHOLS, 97, of DelEvan; Mary McNULTY, 71, of Java Center; Pearl LORCH BROWN, 75, of Machias. 35 Years Ago - February 8, 1968 New York Telephone announced plans to include the Java-Strykersville exchange in its Buffalo toll-free area by mid-1969. Gordon and Alice SHAW PIXLEY of Delevan celebrated their golden anniversary. The Crystal Hose Company of Yorkshire elected Arthur McELHENY president and Larry WILLIAMS chief. Marilyn MARTIN of Machias was named Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow at the Delevan-Machias High School. 50 Years Ago - February 5, 1953 Horace B. KENYON retired from the Kenyon Service Station in Chaffee and turned the business over to his son, Durwood. Lyman CORNWALL was elected president of the Holland Local of the Dairymen's League.
