Matt TRAVERSE, a senior at Pioneer, led the field at the ECIC golf tournament. He shot a 154 over 36 holes, to beat 120 other golfers. Deaths: Claude WILSON Sr., 85, of Arcade; Donald KIBLER, 74, of North Java; Wayne "Butch" HOLLAND, 60, of Machias; Raymond MADDEX, 83, of Arcade; Hazel McDOWELL HAWS, 76, of Holland; Franklin SICLARI, 59, of Arcade; Merritt ROBLEE, 66, formerly of Farmersville Station. 25 Years Ago - October 19, 1978 Harold and Marie HYLAND retired, after operating Hyland's shoe store in Arcade for 32 years. Deaths: Gordon "Shorty" HOPKINS, 68, of Arcade; Blanche McELHINNY, 98, formerly of Arcade. 35 Years Ago - October 17, 1968 Spec. Robert FORKL of Holland was honored posthumously with the Bronze Star, in a ceremony at his parents' home. He had been killed in action in Vietnam the previous January. Pioneer Central School named two principals for its junior-senior high school. Raymond GARLAPO was named building principal and William O'CONNELL was named program principal. Verlis WILEY was elected president of the Arcade Kiwanis Club. Steve GLOR, Richard LEWIS, and Eric BROSCHE represented Holland Central on Channel 4's "It's Academic" program. Mr. and Mrs. William WARD of Bliss observed their golden anniversary. Deaths: Redmond HULTON, 64, of Chaffee; Richard BRAY, 86, of Arcade; Margaret CHARLES RICHARDSON, 85, formerly of Freedom. 50 Years Ago - October 15, 1953 The Herald included several photos of the Borden's plant in Delevan. It had formerly been a milk plant, but had been completely remodeled and equipped as a cheese plant, due to the efforts of Borden's executive George WILSON, a former Delevan resident. Harry SIBLEY was superintendent of the plant, which employed 45 people.
