Max "Skip" STRAUSS, formerly of Sardinia, died at age 62. 25 Years Ago - September 14, 1978 Harry S. DOUGLASS and Arcade Mayor John BAILEY cut the ribbon for the new DOUGLASS Drive off North Street. The developer of the senior citizens' apartment complex on the new street was Jack DAUGHERTY. Following the dedication of the street, Mr. DOUGLASS was honored at a surprise testimonial dinner at the Crystal Inn. He had retired a few years earlier as Wyoming County's first historian, and had recently retired as Arcade's first town and village historian, prior to his permanent move to Orlando, Florida. Margaret D. HOPKINS, an Army nurse during World War II, became the first woman to join the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Arcade. This followed a vote at the national VFW convention to accept women into membership. Deaths: John BOSSINGER of Arcade; Lara MAUL of Machias. 35 Years Ago - September 12, 1968 Herbert ARNOLD began his duties as supervising principal at Holland Central School. He had previously served as principal at Franklin Central. Plans were being made for a community dinner in honor of Harold O. BRUMSTED, who, at the time he retired, was the only supervision principal Holland Central had ever known. He had come to Holland in 1926, five years prior to centralization. William ERICK was elected president of the Arcade Community Chest, and Clair BINGHAM was named chairman of the 1968 drive. Herbert HERMAN Jr. was elected master of the Delevan Grange. Deaths: Julius SCINECKI, 85, of Machias; Frederick RAUENHORST, 70 of Arcade. 50 Years Ago - September 10, 1953 Elected master of local Granges were George MODEN at Bliss and James KUSTER at Holland. Ethel TULLAR was named manager of the cafeteria at Arcade Central School.
