They were Vern BLISS of Arcade, Charger; Larry HAVENS of Chaffee, Pro Modified; and Eldon KING of Delevan, Late Model. Conrad PHELPS and his wife, Irma, had returned to his hometown of Chaffee for several months while on furlough from their work with the Wycliffe Bible Translators in Peru. The Cattaraugus County Legislature held a session at the County Home and Infirmary in Machias. The main purpose for meeting there was the dedication of the bell that had hung until 1951 in a bell tower at what for many years was the county's poorhouse. Deaths: Elaine TYRON BAUGHMAN, 71, of Machias; Helen LAMBERT BROWN, 63, of Arcade; Arthur "Dean" KROTZ, 39, formerly of Yorkshire. 25 Years Ago - September 21, 1978 Kenneth and Vera LEXER JAQUISH, formerly of Delevan, observed their golden anniversary. 35 Years Ago - September 19, 1968 Deaths: Joseph BENSTEAD, 77, of Chaffee; Linda PIRDY of Bliss; Francis PARKER, 26, of Chaffee; Eleanor METCALF CROSBY, 60, of Sandusky; Mamie BREMILLER NEAMON, 83, of Arcade. 50 Years Ago - September 17, 1953 Construction began on St. Jude's Church in Sardinia. The land for the $30,000 building was donated by Sam LaSCALA, and a major contribution was made by Fred FORNESS Jr. of Olean. Alice CRAWFORD was elected president of the American Legion auxiliary at Bliss. Celebrating golden anniversaries were Mr. and Mrs. S.C. BARBER of Bliss and Dr. and Mrs. Blanchard FISH, formerly of Delevan.
