Snowfall ranged from several inches to over two feet, but the high winds made it impossible for plows to keep some roads open. Kevin and Karen SCHAMBACH were preparing for a grand opening at their new maple syrup supply business on Route 39 in Sardinia. Deaths: Kenneth KOCH, 65, of Farmersville; Kathryn LATSON LEWIS, 90, formerly of Arcade. 25 Years Ago - March 22, 1978 The Pioneer girls' basketball team lost to Niagara-Wheatfield, 56-51, in the Class A sectional semi-finals. Nancy GETHICKER led the team with 31 points. Pioneer, coached by Buzz CHADDOCK, finished with an 18-2 record for the season. Ruth KENYON was elected president of the Chaffee-Sardinia Firemen's Auxiliary. Hazel ROBINSON LOCKE, a native of McKinstry, died at age 81. 35 Years Ago - March 21, 1968 The Delevan-Machias basketball team, coached by Buzz CHADDOCK, won its second straight Section VI Class C title by crushing Mayville, 109-63. High scorers were Stan JANAS, John KRIST, Jack LISENBY and Mike DUGAN. Arcade's basketball team lost to Penn Yan, 61-58, in the Section V Class B semi-final game. The defeat ended a 31-game win streak, over two seasons for Coach Tom POPE's defending sectional champions. Robert BLACKMAN was elected commander of the American Legion post in Holland. Deaths: Thomas DOUGLASS, 92, of Arcade; Mary Alice SCHANG of Yorkshire. 50 Years Ago - March 19, 1953 J. T. SULLIVAN was re-elected mayor and Clyde DICKEY was re-elected trustee in the Village of Arcade. Shirley CONROY of Java Center was named valedictorian and Dennis SHARON of Arcade was salutatorian of the Class of 1953 at Arcade Central School. The congregation of the Delevan Baptist Church burned the mortgage on its five-year old building. Shirley GARLAPO was elected president of the Arcade Monday Club.
