The Rev. H. Robert MITCHELL, pastor of the church since 1976, was about to leave for a new pastorate in Albion. Deaths; William PLUMB, 64, of Delevan; Mary WEKENMANN SCHULTZ, 80, of Arcade; Adolph "Hank" SCHILLER, 66, formerly of Arcade. 25 Years Ago - May 24, 1978 William KNAUF succeeded Dee SCHNITZLER as president of the Arcade Lions Club. The Machias American Legion post and auxiliary selected Paul LAVREY to attend Boys State and Donna BALEWICK to attend Girls State. The Pioneer Marching Band, led by drum majors Beth ERICK and Beth KITTLESON, took first place at the Springville Pageant of Bands. The color guard, captained by Lori WEAVER, took two first places. Deaths: Pearl BROWN UNGER, 87, of Java Center; Medford KNAPP, 62, of Yorkshire. 35 Years Ago - May 23, 1968 Elizabeth NEWBOLD was crowned queen of the Holland Tulip Festival, which was held in conjunction with Holland's sesquicentennial. Bishop James McNULTY formally dedicated the new St. Joseph's Church building in Holland during the Tulip Festival weekend. The Delevan-Machias seniors took their trip to Washington over Memorial Day weekend. The trip had been postponed from Easter, due to the riots that followed the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jane KESTER of Yorkshire was valedictorian and Marilyn MARTIN of Machias was salutatorian of the graduating class at Delevan-Machias. Deaths: Margaret LEONARD CLINCH, 88, of Arcade; Louis SUGG, 83, of Arcade; Theodore SCROBACK, 51, of Arcade; Joseph ZACK, 61, of Arcade. 50 Years Ago - May 21, 1953 Regal Rebekah Lodge in Delevan observed its 50th anniversary.
