He sold his gas station to Tom CHOUSE in 1976. Michael BARBER of Delevan, a member of Troop 55 in Arcade, became an Eagle Scout. John and Anna REDING ALMETER, formerly of Freedom, observed their 65th anniversary. Deaths: Edwin ANDERSON, 81, of Delevan; Helen ROWLAND, 84, of Machias; Frank MILLER Sr., 74, of Delevan; Hazel BLAKELEY FREYBURGER, 64, of Holland; John PEPLIN Sr., 56, of Delevan; Richard HEFTKA, 58, of Machias; Gwendolyn CHARLES, 68, a native of Freedom who served as a missionary in Africa for 46 years. 25 Years Ago - March 29, 1979 Joyce BARTLETT was elected to succeed Kenneth BEACH as mayor of Delevan. She became Delevan's first woman mayor. John BAILEY retired as mayor of Arcade and was succeeded by John YANSICK. Jacqueline LAIRD was elected the village's first woman trustee. Brevard College in North Carolina won a double overtime basketball championship. Their coach was Arcade Central School alumnus John MEYERHOFF. Mr. and Mrs. Frank ROBERTS of Arcade observed their golden anniversary. The Reverend Harvey COMPO became pastor of the Java Village Baptist Church. Deaths: Harold MAHNK, 60, of Machias; former area resident William MOLTRUP, 46. 35 Years Ago - March 27, 1969 Ken SPENCER won the MVP title, and he and Paul STEVENS were named to the Class A all-star team. Other top scorers on Coach Tom POPE's team included Jeff AUSTIN, Mike HASKELL and Gary DECKER. The front-page article about Arcade's basketball wins was written by high school student Mike TANNER. Robert CHADDOCK was honored at a testimonial dinner in recognition of his accomplishments as a coach at Delevan-Machias. Deaths: Nellie BLITON HARDY, 65, of Delevan; Catherine JACOBY METZ of Strykersville; Forest SPRAGUE, 76, of Farmersville; Edwin VAN NATTER, formerly of Holland; Thomas HYLAND, 88, of Bliss; Floyd HOUSE, 87, of Holland. 50 Years Ago - March 25, 1954 Dale KILE was elected commander of the Arcade VFW post. Frances KUHN of Machias was elected president of the PTA at Delevan-Machias Central School. The junior class at D-M presented the play "Nearly Beloved" in the Machias auditorium. Sandra SCHAUS and Ray GOERSS had the lead parts. Lucille DRAKE was elected president of the Arcade Research Club.
