If you have donated information to Rootsweb.com's "Worldconnect" (aka Ancestry.com's "Ancestry World Tree") with the understanding that your effort would not be used for financial profit, please be aware of a new development. MyFamily.com (who bought Ancestry, who bought Rootsweb... I think) is launching a new fee-based service which uses the data submitted into the old "free" areas. Free access is still available, but I imagine newcomers will be steered toward the subscription-based stuff first (for example, through the "Find your ancestors" ads that seem to pop up everywhere). I asked them if it was possible for my data to remain in the free area and not be available through the pay service, since I think they're reneging on the promise they made when I donated my tree. I have attached their answer below. I was not aware of this development before finding it almost by accident last week, so I thought I would pass it along. Feel free to share this information. Scott (for the time being, still at http://wc.rootsweb.com/~sbarvian) "The One World Tree service searches data from other collections on Ancestry.com (including the information found in the Ancestry World Tree and RootsWeb WorldConnect service) to get more accurate results more quickly, and currently there is no method of having your data in WorldConnect or the Ancestry Family Tree and not have it appear in the One World Tree. To remove information you submitted you will simply need to remove it from the Ancestry World Tree or WorldConnect by 21 May 2004. [Note was sent on May 22, and I received no advance notice prior to May 21] Please keep in mind that Ancestry.com is not charging for access to the data you submitted, but is charging for the use of the advanced searching and stitching capabilities of the One World Tree service. User-submitted family trees are free and will remain free through the Ancestry World Tree and the RootsWeb WorldConnect databases. The One World Tree service is simply an optional tool available for your research. A subscription to the One World Tree service is not required in order for you to submit a file or for other researchers to search and view the files you submit at no charge through the Ancestry World Tree and the RootsWeb WorldConnect databases."
