Progressive Batavian Batavia, Genesee County, New York State February 26-1875 Local Record A Le Roy Man Hurt.-The Attica 'News' tells of a man--an old engineer, but now out of employ--who, in attempting a day or two since to "board" a moving train, was thrown under the cars and had his little finger broken, his right wrist fractured, and the back of his head bruised, barely escaping being crushed under the car wheels. The 'News' doesn't give his name. Attica has a "St. James Hotel." An Attican who milked ten cows the past season realized $73.30 a head as his share of the dividend from the sale of cheese. submitted by L.Schmidt
Where should I look to learn the facts of the following story? In the "History of the Town of Warsaw, New York," 1869, Andrew W. Young writes of my 4g grand uncle, Nathan WHITING, 1795- ? , and his brother-in-law, Chauncey SHELDON, 1786-1866, both who served in the Patriot War of 1837 (an insurrection in Canada where many U.S. citizens joined the Canadian patriots). Eventually both were captured and banished to Van Dieman's Land, Australia. One escaped after seven years; the other was pardoned. Both returned to America. Thank you for any help you can offer. I would love to correspond with any descendants of these men. Sally Bailey [email protected]
I sometimes see articles containing information like: "In 1890, the average life expectancy was 43 years old, birth rate survival was 65%, etc etc etc." Does anybody know where I can dig up such facts in any given decade in the past ? On a website? Kurt Fox [email protected] Alexander, NY
Does anybody have more information on the Hasslebeck Cheese Factory? I've heard it mentioned that it operated first in Bennington, then Sheldon, Java and Attica (Attica Center). Kurt Fox [email protected] Alexander, NY

Progressive Batavian Batavia, Genesee County, New York State February 5-1875 Attica. Failure.--Another of those falitures, so common in commercial cities, has visited Attica. Last Saturday, Jan. 30, the store of John PUTNAM, dry goods merchant, was closed, and the curtains drawn on the scene. It was soon noised abroad on the streets that a failure was the cause, and that an assignment had been made, which report proved to be too true. I am not prepared to give any definite figures as yet; various reports are in circulation, fixing his liabilities from $25,000 to $30,000. We are both surprised and pained at the information above given by our Attica correspondent, and earnestly hope the case may not prove as bad as reported. * Ambrose SUITS, of Wyoming county, was tried and convicted at Rochester, on Monday last, of burglary and larceny and was sent to Auburn for three years. Wonder if that Suits him. * The new postal card will be nearly white, printed with black ink, and the border will be narrower. By the United States Government statistics for 1871 it is ascertained, that the salaries of all ministers of the gospel amounts to $6,000,000. Cost of dogs, $10,000,000. Cost of tobacco and cigars,, $610,000,000. Importation of liquor, $50,000,000. Support of grog shops, $1,500,000,000. Whole cost of liquor, $2,200,000,000. * submitted by Linda Schmidt
Hi Anita, Thanks for the reply. You can find Edmund/Edmond in the Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors book. He was born, supposedly in Amherst Mass in 1762(I think it was outside of Amherst), did several hitches with the militia and continental army and was finally mustered out of his last one at West Point. He even did one as a replacement for a friend named Kellog. I believe that when his unit was going through Connecticut he may have met the Mott family there while he was sick because he went back to Canterbury, Windham Co. Ct. and married Sarah Mott in 1788, had 4 children there including our Benjamin who came to Mich. in 1823(others were Joseph, John, and Lydia). Edmond moved from Ct. to Vermont abt 1792/93, lived in Pawlett(1800) and Orwell(1810), then moved to Middlebury between 1810 and 1820. I have the microfilm of his pension file from NARA. The letters were written for him by the first Judge of Genesee Co. at the time. Also, only one lady has gone into the DAR off of him, a descendent of his daughter, Elizabeth Rowe. I know that Edmund, his wife Sarah Mott, his daughter Elizabeth Rowe and her husband Moses, and his son Joseph are all buried in Wyoming Village Cem. I would think that his mother, Elizabeth Gould, who supposedly lived to abt 103 would be buried there also but am not sure. My big problem is proving her maiden name was Thayer and that she was married to Joseph Gould either in Amherst in 1758--town record/maybe only intentions--or in Spencer or Charleton,Worcester, Mass. on Nov 7, 1759. There was a big problem with the family just after Christmas in 1764 because Edmond, Elizabeth, and Martha Gould were warned out which probably meant they just blew into town. I am quite sure that she(Elizabeth) was living with her husband Joseph Gould in Toppsfield Mass in 1810, was living next door to a Joseph Gould Jr. in 1820 and probably moved to Middlebury from Toppsfield Mass between 1820 and 1830 to live with Edmond. I believe that her husband, Joseph, died between 1810 and 1820. I am in a quandry over this Joseph Jr. because in an affidavit which appears in Edmond's Pension papers she tells that Edmond was her only son(she was 91 at the time and may have been slipping). Edmond's Pension file jacket has his name as Edmond/Edmund Gould evidently because he signs it both ways. I really think he was trying to be Edmond because his son Benjamin had a son named Edmond. So, anyway, do you have anything which shows Elizabeth Gould's maiden name to be Thayer? Am glad to hear what you have done with the cemeteries in Wyoming Co., Anita as some of the people here are walking some of the cemeteries here in our area also to try to get the reads collected as a county wide effort. Would be glad to pay for some research if it's fruitful. Maybe Probate records would be available to show Elizabeth Gould's maiden name. She probably would have died when Middlebury was in Wyoming Co. and not in Genesee. Am hoping that John may have had a family history on file----maybe not though if he didn't know anything about Edmond's Rev War service.----Better be sure that DAR puts one of their plaques on his grave. I really don't think that they knew where he was buried. regards, John Voorhees ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anita Hayes" <[email protected]> To: "john voorhees" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 10, 2003 11:00 AM Subject: Re: [NYWYOMIN] Passing of a Great Historian > John - the Wyoming County Historian's Office does not have email. Hi, It was great to hear from so many of you. I just copy what the Arcade Herald prints in their weekly Remember When column. The author of the column goes through the old newspapers and extracts the information. He asked that his name not be published on the List. Since so many of us are interested in older information, we could write to the Arcade Herald, 223 Main Street, Arcade, NY 14009, tell them how much we enjoy the Remember When column and request that they include information from 75 and 100 years ago. Maybe if we also mentioned that if they included that information, we would subscribed to the newspaper, they might decide to include it. And then, of course, we would subscribe if they include the additional information. Here's this week's Remember When.... Trish Hackett Nicola Seattle, WA Reprinted with permission from the author, Remember When..., p. 7, Arcade Herald, January 2, 2003, copied by Trish Hackett Nicola (*See below for information on how to receive a copy of the original article or obituary.) 10 Years Ago - January 1993 [This week's Remember When... column did not include 10 Years Ago.] 25 Years Ago - January 4, 1978 Pete SCHNITZLER sold his newsstand in downtown Arcade to Ted FREEMAN. Postal rates for first-class mail were increased to six cents. Dear Readers: It is with a very heavy heart that I pass on the sad news of the death of former Wyoming County Historian John G. Wilson who passed away this morning. Many of you knew John though his writings, his research and his true love for the history and people of Wyoming County. John will be greatly missed by many -especially me. He was not only my colleague but my dearest friend. Anita Ripstein Hayes
Hi everyone, Thank you to everyone who responded to my questions about how much of the Arcade Herald Remember When... column to post on the NYWYOMIN-L. It was great to hear from so many people! The consensus was to continue all of it. Some is pretty current but might be helpful to someone. Everyone would like to see older information. Jeff Mason dutifully summarizes the information from the old issues and, with his blessing and permission from the Arcade Herald, I copy it to the list. There are microfilms of the older Arcade Herald issues, starting in 1894, at the Arcade Free Library, Arcade Historical Society, Delevan Historical Society, and the Delevan Library. If anyone on the List has access them, the time, and good enough eyesight to transcribe them; I am sure the rest of us would be very grateful. Trish Hackett Nicola
Trish, I enjoy reading all of the "Remember When"! Please continue to submit all of it. In ten years the "ten years" will twenty years, etc. And there will be younger people looking for information and when they search the NYWYOMIN-L Archives they might find that person that has been hiding from them! Keep up the good work! Thank You Christina Laskowski

Hi, Now that I have been submitting the Arcade Herald, Remember When for some time, I am wondering how useful it is. What do you think? 1. Should I list things from 10 years ago, 25 years ago, 35 year, and 50 years ago? 2. Are some of those things too current? 3. Should I just list deaths? 4. Has anyone searched the NYWYOMIN-L Archives and found something that was listed in the Arcade Herald? I don't want to be using up space on the NYWYOMIN-L if it isn't useful. Sometimes I wonder if the information is too current for the List. Please tell me what you think. Thank you. Trish Hackett Nicola

John D. Baker and Elizabeth Coleman were b in England abt 1815. Came to the U. S. in the very late 1820s or 1830s. The first I find them in the U. S. is in what is thought to be Wyoming County but it may be Wyoming in Genesee County as it would be about the time Wyoming County came into being. By the 1850 Census they have moved to Lenawee County MI and by 1860 the family is located in Trempealeau County, WI where they homesteaded. They are still in Trempealeau County , WI in 1870. Some of the family migrates on to Nebraska by 1880 settle there. Children of John and Elizabeth are Sylvia b in 1836 NY George b 1839 NY Ellen b 1841 in NY William b 1843 NY Charles Wesley b 1845 NY all of these may have been born in Wyoming NY (per a family note) Carolyn b 1849 MI James Harvey b 1851 MI Harriett Emma b 1854 MI I would like to get in contact with anyone else researching this family. I have quite a bit of information but would like to find exactly when John and Elizabeth came to the U. S and what happened to Sylvia as she is on the 1850 Lenawee County MI Census but I have found nothing on her since. If anyone is researching this family I would appreciate hearing from you. I will share what I have. Frank
